A Girl's Guide to Geek Guys
By Mikki Halpin and Victoria Maat

So, your crush on the bass player from Vibrating Sandbox has finally died a whimpering death and you're wondering where to go from here. All the sinister dudes are either dating a series of interchangeable high-school riot girls in baby doll dresses and an overdose of manic panic, or permanently shacked up with some bitter old lady who pays all the bills. Which will it be, a wifely prison or a humiliating one night stand? Into this void of potential mates comes a man you may not have considered before, a man of substance, quietude and stability, a cerebral creature with a culture all his own. In short, a geek.

Why Geek Dudes Rule
# They are generally available.
# Other women will tend not to steal them.
# They can fix things.
# Your parents will love them.
# They're smart.

Where The Geek Dude Lurks
While they are often into alternative music, geek dudes tend not to go to shows too often. Instead you'll find them hanging out with their friends, discussing the latest hardware revolution or perfecting their Bill Gates impressions. You know how some people wear t-shirts with their favorite bands on them, thus showing that they went to certain shows? Well, geek dudes wear t-shirts with the logos of different software companies on them, thus showing that they are up on the latest, um, releases. A small, though convivial, rivalry may be detected here amongst the geek dudes. Try wearing one yourself and see if he strikes up a conversation. Of course the best way to meet a geek dude is through the Internet. All geeks harbor a secret fantasy about meeting some girl in cyberspace, carrying on an e-mail romance in which he has the chance to combine an activity he is comfortable with, computing, with one he is very uncomfortable with, socializing. To many geek dudes, cyberdating is just an advanced form of some kind of video game, but they are frustrated by a lack of players. Their lack is your strength.

You might notice that these men harbor some strange ideas about how the world works and some particularly strange ideas about women. There is a reason for this. Because they've had limited interpersonal experience, geek dudes must look elsewhere for behavior models. Lacking a real world social milieu, geeks often go through a transference stage with such narratives, and try to model their interactions on them. Thus, certain media images and themes come to have an overly cathected, metaphorized reality to them, while the rest of us view such programming as mere entertainment. Case in point, our next topic...

The Trek factor
If you're not up on your Star Trek, you can forget about getting or keeping a geek dude. And I'm not just talking vintage-era Captain Kirk and Spock either. You've got to be up on your The Next Generation, your Deep Space Nine, your Babylon 5. Armed with your own knowledge of Federation policies, you can better gauge when and how to act. The sexual politics of Star Trek are pretty blunt: the men run the technology and the ship, and the women are caretakers (a doctor and a counselor). Note the sexual tensions on the bridge of the Enterprise: the women, in skin tight uniforms, and with luxuriant, flowing hair. The men, often balding, and sporting some sort of permanently attached computer auxiliary. This world metaphorizes the fantasies of the geek dude, who sees himself in the geeky-but-heroic male officers and who secretly desires a sexy, smart, Deanna or Bev to come along and deferentially accept him for who he is. If you are willing to accept that this is his starting point for reality, you are ready for a geek relationship.

Once You've Nabbed Him
Of course, catching that geek guy is only half the battle. Keeping him by your side is another story altogether. I was privileged to speak with Miss Victoria Maat, who not only got herself a geek guy but was also clever enough to marry him just a few short months ago. She interrupted her newlywed bliss to give us a few tips on the care and feeding of a geek man: Geeks are sensitive and caring lovers and husbands. If you can hang with the techno-lifestyle, they make the best mates. They are the most attractive people, not flashy or hunky, but the kind who get cuter and more alluring over time (I told you she was a newlywed). Definitely give geeks a chance.

Geek Cuisine
Geeks tend towards packaged, junk foods since they prefer to work and think and aren't all that into cooking for themselves. Make sure that your geek understands that you are not merely a replicator, and provide him with home cooked food. A batch of chocolate chip cookies will let him know that you love him. You do have to monitor your geek for weight gain; however, remember that most of their days are spent sitting and staring at a monitor.

Geek Lifestyle
The geek dude has long work habits and tends to bring his work home with him. He seems permanently connected to his hard disk. You must at least appear interested in his work. Generally, a solid understanding of the computer is a must; if you cannot master this, you should at least be able to talk the talk. Remember most geeks are anal and they get stressed about details which appear insignificant. Be understanding, put on your best Deanna Troi face (see above) and empathize. To relax, geeks love to play the latest computer games. Let him play Myst or Chuck Yeager's Air Combat for hours if he wants to. Act concerned if he's stuck or has just been ambushed by three MiGs. My geek loves to try to help people on the Internet who say that they are stuck in Myst. He comes up with clever riddles instead of directing them point blank. Geeks also like to go to sci-fi and Japanese animated movies, again, a basically harmless vent for your man.

Geek Buddies
Many geeks extend their work friendships into what they jokingly refer to as RL (Real Life, also known as "that big room with the ceiling that is sometimes blue and sometimes black with little lights"). The greatest thing about your geek's buddies is that you can feel secure in setting them up with your girlfriends. They may feel awkward around females at first, so don't overwhelm them. In time they will come out of their shell and realize that you are into the same things they are.

Post-It Note
I thank Victoria for the above advice. I must say that when she read my draft of the piece, before writing her section, she asked her husband which one he thought she was more like, Deanna or Beverly. Howard, the devil, immediately replied that he had always thought Victoria was actually most like Ensign Ro Laren, a cute character with a slight authority problem who is always had trouble (this is fairly apt). This exchange is interesting for several reasons:

1. Howard had already thought about who she was most like.
2. He could summon up characters from seasons past with ease.
3. Victoria actually knew who he meant.
4. Folks, I think this marriage will last.

One Last Thing
Because they have been so abused and ignored by society, many geeks have gone underground. You may actually know some and just haven't noticed them. They often feel resentful, and misunderstood, and it is important to realize this as you grow closer to them. Don't ever try to force the issue, or make crazy demands that he choose between his computer and you. Remember, his computer has been there for him his whole life; you are a new interloper he hasn't quite grasped yet Geek dudes thrive on mystery and love challenges and intellectual puzzles. Don't you consider yourself one? Wouldn't you like a little intellectual stimulation or your own? We thought so.

Earning from your i.ph blog
Wednesday, September 28, 2005

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -318741.02

(This entry is part of the i.ph Blogger Program)

Why not earn while sharing your photos or articles at the same time? i.ph offers a way to do both easily with their Pay4Access feature for i.ph members. Your contents will be restricted to whom who have paid a small subscription fee you desire.

The possibilities are almost limitless to what you can offer for you paid blog. If you're a poet or writer, you can offer your poems. If you're a photographer, you can distribute your photos. Got downloadable media? You can sell them all here!

When I tried to setup my Pay4Access, I encountered a glith that prevented me on setting it up properly. If you do encounter this error, email helpdesk@domains.ph for assistance. I doubt if posting in their forum helps since I saw posts several weeks old without any replies:

i.ph offers 2 ways to remit your earnings: G-Cash and PayPal. Since most of the i.ph users live in the Philippines, chances are they don't have PayPal accounts. This leaves you G-Cash. But what if I have a Smart or SUN line? Maybe i.ph is in the works of having Smart Money, but as for SUN -- nada.

But if you happen to have a PayPal and G-Cash account, choose them wisely since you must wait for 8 days to change the information.

Once your earnings have reached P1,000 by the end of the month, you'll recieved them by the 5th of the succeeding month. Pay4Access is a nifty feature of i.ph that you'll never see anywhere on the FREE blogspace arena. Very very useful if you ask me. I'll give this a 5 out of 5! Pay4Access rocks!

Wait for my high quality symbian wallpaper collections in the coming days! Very very cheap access. *wink*

Nanood kami ng Lovestruck ni Lalaine kanina.... Walandyo. 'Bat ba ako napasok dun. Maganda daw... Kung ako tatanungin, crap and typical pinoy (crap) movie. Pang fanatics lang to ---and I'm not one of them. Mas maganda pa ang Can this be love nila Sandara Porkchop. Speaking of porkchops, masarap yung bagong Jollibee Fries with Cheese and Beef. Yum yum! =P~

I liked the ending credits though. Maybe because I saw RoadRunner in the movie's ending credits... a company 98.9% owned by ABS-CBN. ABS-CBN is earning from GMA Network's movies. Nice. :~)

Nakita din namin yung trailer ng My Sassy Girl. Syete. Wala lang.

Captain's Log Stardate -318736.26

(This entry is part of the i.ph Blogger Program)

i.ph is not just your ordinary Blogger or LiveJournal account, you could have your own Photo Album (i.Gallery) as well! You can use this to compile your memorable trips to tralala or just share them to your friends.

You'll have complete access on how you could share your photos. You can Hide the entire album or you could create specific users for your friends to let them view a private album. But restricting an album will not restrict images from being posted on your blog. For example, you have very disturbing pictures of yourself inside one of your private albums. You still can post this image on your blog but the entire collection can be restricted to friends or just yourself.

You can create different folder and albums for your vacation pictures, graduation, weddings, and more. You'll also have the chance to earn via your album but I haven't explored that option yet since I cannot activate my Pay4Access account.

It's difficult to move several photos though. If your have several photos in an album and would like to move them to a sub-album or another album, you have to move each picture manually. It would be easy for users if there is a check box on every photo to minimize the time to move a picture.

Posting via email is also available for your i.Gallery. This means that you can post your pictures via email anytime, anywhere, Mobiline! Woops! :D I encountered the same problem with blog email posting though. You still have to wait and reply to the email confirmation i.ph sends which will limit the possibility of posting pictures via MMS.

PhotoBlogging Score: 4 out of 5

TimeAsia's Asian Heroes 2005

Captain's Log Stardate -318732.47

Tima Asia's poll has turned into circus. Manny Pacquiao and Korean Star Rain have been leading with unbelievable numbers for the past few days. This is because of the security lapse in the implementation of the poll. Everyone can vote as many times as they like. Just hit the back button then vote again! I even found an exe file that can vote for Manny Pacquiao with a specified time interval. Of course, koreans-- with more superior broadband access, would never let Rain loose on the poll marathon eh?

posting with i.ph

Captain's Log Stardate -318729.77

(This entry is part of the i.ph Blogger Program)

I posted something earlier using i.ph's conventional posting method via my user's control panel. Posting is fairly simple. Type in your subject and entry and use the provided "buttons" to format your entry. The editor is based on an opensource project.

i.ph has the EXTENDED PART feature which allows you to divide your blog entry so that your whole article would not clutter the mainpage. This is useful for very long entries. I haven't figured out yet if this feature is compatible with EMAIL POSTING. But maybe the guys at domains.ph could tweak some codes to make this feature available via EMAIL POSTING.

You could attach Photos easily via your i-gallery or upload directly from your desktop. There are also a pelothra of plugin in the control panel.

Local and Google Keywords
Use this to specify search keywords related to your blog entry.

SmartyPants is a free web publishing plug-in that easily translates plain ASCII punctuation characters into “smart” typographic punctuation HTML entities.

# Straight quotes ( " and ' ) into “curly” quote HTML entities
# Backticks-style quotes (``like this'') into “curly” quote HTML entities
# Dashes (“--” and “---”) into en- and em-dash entities
# Three consecutive dots (“...”) into an ellipsis entity

Textile Syntax
You'll be able to post formatted entries without knowing much about HTML. Complete documentation can be found on i.ph's control panel

Most of us don't need these plugins but they're nice additions to the feature-packed interface of i.ph's blogging interface. Users can also specify on what date and time their post should appear on their blog.

You could also specify Trackback URLs for other blogs. Currently, trackback for your own i.ph blogs is off to prevent trackback spams. Speaking of spams, i.ph offers spam protections for your tagboards and comments. Neat.

i.ph's posting via its control panel is much better than the email posting feature. I'll give it a 5 out of 5 for this feature since it's so simple that a n00b can post his first blog in a matter of minutes.

More Text Scams

Captain's Log Stardate -318727.73

My grandmother's cellphone recieved a (possible) text scam this morning:

Congratulations! The last 4digits of ur celfone# had won a prize in our PCCNS electronic draw last Sept. 10, 2005. Call me now 2 claim ur prize, I'm Mark Santos

Sender: +639158310947

I asked for his email address since "my load was about to expire" so we could constantly be in touched. Still waiting for his reponse...

A very powerful tool ---FRIENDSTER. Kung tatanga tanga yung hinuhunting mo... He would normally use a single email for all his transactions, Friendster included. Shucks, I just told you my secret. Your PC will now self destruct in 1 nano second... *poof*

Anyway, here's a reminder from Globe about these scams:

Fake Promos via Text

WARNING! Don't be a victim of fake promos via text. Here are 3 easy ways to spot a false promo:

1. Beware of text messages informing you that you've won a special prize, specially if you don't remember joining that particular promo.

2. Our winners are never asked to pay cash or send prepaid load as a condition to claiming the prize.

3. Winners are advised via appropriate means such as letters, phone calls from company representatives, and advertisements.

If you have questions about a promo or wish to report any suspicious text message, dial 211 for Globe or 808 for Touch Mobile toll-free using your cellphone.

Loyalty of an Alumnus
Tuesday, September 20, 2005

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -318720.46

I was having a conversation with Karlo a few minutes ago regarding some of our schoolmates and our own school. Karlo, whatever you hear about FEU instructors getting their master's degree on AMACU, how popular AMACU is in Japan or Middle East... time will come that these companies will learn how MOST of AMACU's graduates are almost all bunch of craps that don't even know how to install an operating system.

I know how loyal you are and how you love your, our, alma matter.. but you must also wake up and see the truth. Even I came from this institution, it doesnt mean I'll just have to shut up. You said, "kung lalo mo nilulubog ama, nilulubog m narin ung sarili mo". All I've stated here on my blog and on our IM conversations are all facts. FYI, I havent uttered a single defamatory statement regarding our school without basis. If you can improve their system.. go on! But I doubt you'd do any good with all those monsters surrounding Mr. Aguiluz.

Sabagay, don't bite the hands that feeds you dba?

The only way evil can triump is if good men do nothing...

Email Posting with i.ph

Captain's Log Stardate -318719.67

(This entry is part of the i.ph Blogger Program)

I've finally finished designing my ITlog on i.ph and it's now time to post something. The feature I liked most here on Blogger is the ability to post an entry via email. This feature is very useful especially to bloggers on the road. You can post entries on the fly by just sending an email using your laptop or cellphone.

I've posted a sample entry using the email address I've specified on the control panel. You must send your entries to [name of blog category]@[blogname].[subdomain].i.ph. You can also attach images to your email and the image will be posted on your entry.

You will recieve an email confirmation once you have sent your email to i.ph and you must reply to this email with the SUBJECT intact... this is where a problem arise for bloggers using MMS. What if I saw my crush on the way and luckily, I have my handy cam-phone with me. I wanted to have a picture with her and would like to immediately post it on my blog. Normally, I would just send the MMS to my i.ph email... but i.ph requires a confirmation by replying to their email address.

I am using Globe to send MMS to emails and a recipient of an MMS email cannot reply directly to the sender. The email will simply bounce back with the following error:

Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: DNS Error: DNS server returned answer with no data

With this problem, you CANNOT post entries via MMS ala TextAmerica style. I hope i.ph implements improvements by eliminating the email confirmation so that anyone can start posting MMS on their blogs. Blogger uses the format [username].[unique password]@blogger.com to accept posts via email. i.ph could use the same feature.

Overall, posting via email is a breeze with i.ph. I'll give a 4.5 out of 5 score for i.ph's EMAIL POSTING.

Including tags to end an entry would also be a nice addition for this feature. No one likes to see these on your last paragraph right?

Oh Dear Alma Matter...

Captain's Log Stardate -318711.06

Masakit man tanggapin, pero totoo.

Pinasok namin nila Karlo ang Level Up!

Pagnagkataon, kulong kami nila Karlo at Red.

Oh well... [ Read More 1 ] :: [ Read More 2 ] :: [ Read More 3 ]

Papaano pa kaya yung commercials nila sa TV na IT is Instant Trabaho samantalang sarili nilang graduate, hindi nila mabigyan ng trabaho na maayos at hindi nila maalagaan. Maganda ang concept ng AMA as a school.

Hay.

Dati proud ako to be an AMAer, ngayon nagdadalawang isip nako.

i.ph layout... engage!
Thursday, September 15, 2005

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -318706.43

(This entry is part of the i.ph Blogger Program)

I've been exploring my i.ph blog account and the first thing I want to do was to change how it looks. i.ph runs on Calliope, a locally developed blogging software by domains.ph. Calliope currently offers templates (very few actually -- 5) and only their templates can be used to customized the layout. No customized HTML here.

The customization opened on a new window. I tried to change the layout of my Header text. I wanted to place my Header text on the bottom of the header and aligned to the right. It took me several refreshes and tries but it seems that I cannot vertically align my header text on the middle and bottom of the area. I've also changed the header background image. There's also a few BG to choose from. You cannot upload your own images :(

Ok, enough with that header. Next stop was to customize the objects on my sidebar. It was really frustrating to wait for the page to load everytime I disable or enable an object on my sidebar. Sidebar objects cannot be sorted by the user. So if you want to have the tagboard all the way up, no can do. You'll have to settle several layers below. After finishing the layout for my main page, I decided to check the "APPLY TO ALL" box to apply the changes to the other page of my blog.

So much for changing the looks. I'll give a 3 out of 5 score for i.ph layout customization. There's a lot more to be explored with this service and layout is just a minor feature.

I've named my blog, Jepoy's ITlog (I.T. = InfoTech). ano iniisip nyo?! Ang dudumi ng utak nyo!! tsk! :P I'll be posting tech news that capture's my attention and some personal reviews on that blog. I'll try to post a sample article on my i.ph blog later.

Sir Angelo have told me that I could actually use images I'm about to upload on the i.Gallery. But I'm not gonna change my score :D A reminder or notice or even a FAQ should have been placed to guide newbies, like me, when customizing the layout of the blog. :)

I already have posted a sample article taken from CNN from my ITlog. I'll be experimenting more on the features of the post feature especially the POST BY EMAIL feature later.

I think that's about it, BEAM ME UP SCOTTY.

Captain's i-blog, stardate...

Captain's Log Stardate -318705.82

I was asked by Mr. J Angelo Racoma of J-Spot/J-Spotter to write about my comments and reviews for the i.ph blogging service. I've asked if I could write about some negative things I will see on the service. :) Here's my history about the i.ph blogging service:

I think it was a year ago when I first tried to sign up for an i.ph account. Then the thing I hated most popped into my screen before completing the sign up... IT'S A PAID SERVICE. So much for my .ph domain.

After that incident, I deleted the i.ph bookmark from my browser then continued on using my blogger service. Several months passed, then last April 5, I received an email from Mr. John Paul Aclan of Domains.PH giving me a free access to the i.ph service.

From: John Paul Aclan xxxx@domains.ph
To: xxxx@gmail.com
Date: Apr 5, 2005 2:47 PM
Subject: www.i.ph Free Invite

We are paid blogging service but I am willing to offer you the site for free. And did I mention, you will have your personal website for free? It will be captainjepoy.i.ph or any name you wish to have.

Express yourself . . . Show your creativity and artistry with www.i.ph!

Thanks and God Bless

All the best,

JP Aclan

Funny thing about this email is that I found this on my SPAM folder last July 3! I thought GMail was deleting SPAM mails after 30days... hmmmm... Anyway, I tried to email him to ask if I was still qualified to avail of the FREE (freeeeeeeeeee....) service and where the hell did he find my email address. Whenever I post something on the internet, whether comments to other blog or tagboards, I always use my super-hero email. :D My email to Mr. Aclan bounced back within seconds upon sending it.

I decided to signed up for the service and chose the address --> http://jepoy.i.ph. I was waiting for 2 days for my confirmation code but it didn't arrived. I've asked for Mr. J Angelo's help. He asked to sign up again but I forgot. When I tried to register for my domain again, it was already taken! (Y&*%*&*!!!)

So I forgot i.ph again since I was already happy with my blogger account (hugs Google). 5 days ago, I recieved a Google Talk message from Mr. Angelo asking me if I want to write about i.ph. I told him that I need to evaluate first and have a hands-on impression on the service so I signed up for my account (finally!). You may view my i.ph blog at http://j3p0y.i.ph (yung jepoy na nagsign up sa i.ph... kung hindi mo gagamitin yung domain, akin na lang :D )

I'll be writing my reviews and comments within the next couple of days. So far, i.ph is a mix of WordPress, Blogger, and TextAmerica blogging. Who knows, i.ph might be the next pinoy killer online service.

Jerry Liao's Power Tips

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -318704.02

AMA microsystems Family

Umattend kami kanina ng seminar ni Jerry Liao on Power Tips with Windows XP and Office 2003.

OOHHLAAALLAAAA!! Look at what we have found:

Go places talaga.. GO places talaga ang flyers nila! Wahahaha!! :~)

Ayaw nila Karlo magpapicture.. Nahihiya yatang mainterview. :~)

Andrew, Jerry Liao, Jepoy

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -318687.5

Ian Veneracion: Hindi... May isa pa.

Wala lang.

iPod Nano

Captain's Log Stardate -318685.95

The 3.5 x 1.6 x 0.27-inch device will feature 500 song/2GB and 1,000 song/4GB capacities, a 1.5-inch color display, and, of course, a click wheel, which appears to have a drastically larger center button. If you’re willing to ignore the fact that the headphone jack is located on the bottom of the device (sigh), you’ll be otherwise rewarded with a device that’s no more than 62% the size of the once diminutive iPod mini; it weighs 1.5 ounces (42 grams), has a maximum of 14 hours battery life, will come in black (as well as iPod white), and includes a few new niceties such as a nighttime inverse screen mode. Expect it to have a $199 and $249 pricetag; dock ($29) not included, and new lanyard headphones will be available for $39.

MLM on Mobile = Scam?

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -318684.74

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

Nakakapagpost nako ng images.. wahahahha! I'm starting to love this laptop pero i miss my desktop.. (RIP Motherboard... RIP Power Supply.... :~( )

Anyway, naalala nyo pa ba yung MLM on Mobile? Last week ko lang napansin at down na ang website nila. According sa site nila,

This is a private website for MobileCash Members and their Honored Invitees.

Sorry, we are currently unable to accept registrations as of the moment.

We have launched last 14 August 2005 and has operated for 5 days knowing that our registration papers has already been processed

by an accountant tasked to do our registration proceedings, however when we were already demanding for our registration papers, we found out that no registration has actually occurred; and so, we need to freeze operations as of the meantime so we can put everything in order.

We apologize for the inconvenience...

Maniwala kayo o hindi... basta ako... basta may get rich quick na taglines, SCAM! Sana noon pa lahat tayo mayaman.

Use GMAIL as your mail server

Captain's Log Stardate -318684.72

Just go to Settings > Accounts then click Add Email. To recieve naman, simply forward all email being sent to user@domain.com to your own Gmail account. Sossy! Almost unlimited email space for your own email and domain!

Captain's Log Stardate -318681.05

Kelan kaya matatapos tong gulo sa Pilipinas.... KUNG MATATAPOS PA! Susan Roces, Binay, Lacson, Eddie Villanueva, Jinggoy, Erap, etc... THEY'RE ALL A BUNCH OF FAGS AND LOSERS. Lecheng bayan to. Wala ng pag-asa.
