While Smart's been blabbing about their superior 3G frequency and claiming the first to make a 3G video call, Globe has been rolling out their stuffs to prepare for their 3G launch. As far as I could remember, Globe was the actually the first telco to make a video call in the Philippines, but I might be wrong. I just had my Nokia 6600 repaired for signal problems now, it's goin' to be obsolete :(
I've always envied Japanese with their cutesy flip phones and video calls, now after years of waiting, video calls is now possible in the GSM populated Philippines -- minus the cutesy phones :(
But aren't we behind? Yes 3G is innovative and useful but Japan has already been developing technologies beyond 3G. 3.5G and 4G. While we're all excited about this 3G thing, 3.5G is already available in other countries. We were once offered with GPRS access but upto now, GPRS access has been expensive and always chunks out inaccurate data consumptions. EDGE is no where. But according to Globe's newspaper ad today, they've already tested and deployed 3G and HSDPA (dubbed as 3.5G) connections during the 23rd South East Asian Games... :D
Expect a dial-up view of your video calls and slow-ass data connection when Smart rolls out their 3G services. They can't even handle their PLDT DSL subscribers... what more for their wireless service :( That's why I haven't wrote anything about their nextBIG Thing promo... They're all hype.
Japanese have been enjoying barcode purchases, electronic tickets, high speed access and more. If Globe can pull this one all together, we might see the light of Japanese convenience right on our fingertips.

correct! we are using 3g now like a year ago here.
the main reason why the Philippines is a year late becoz the stupid people handling the license of 3g made it so expensive that they want to hoarde deh money! BOO EUROPEANS!
