Our Technologically-Challenged Politicians...
Sunday, February 26, 2006

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -317155.37

This article of the Daily Tribune clearly shows how technologically-challenged our politicians are. Here's the article:

Senators’ mobile phones ‘blocked’ amid Edsa rally
(taken from Daily Tribune)

Communication lines were suddenly cut off early afternoon yesterday, while anti-riot police were slugging it out with protesters and members of various militant groups along Edsa.

Prime movers in the political opposition realized this, that they were practically “muzzled” for unknown reasons, at a time when they wanted to endlessly use their mobile phone units, a period when they found the country under virtual martial rule.

Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. got suspicious when he saw his cellphone registering the notice “sending failed” as he sent out a common text message to colleagues, Senators Panfilo Lacson, Sergio Osmeña III, Luisa “Loi” Ejercito Estrada, Jinggoy Estrada, Majority Leader Francis Pangilinan and Senate President Franklin Drilon.

“I was telling them that we should consider calling for an emergency session of the Senate. I was expecting their response but when I have not been receiving any, after sending out a text message to them minutes after, I checked my phone and there I saw it didn’t reach them. I tried calling them and still, I couldn’t get through,” Pimentel told the Tribune in an interview.

The senator who was then out in the streets of Makati City preparing himself for the start of the activities he was slated to join, was prompted to borrow the mobile phone of his media relations officer, Omeng Manlangit, but found out that the situation was the same.

Pimentel also realized that his phone had not been ringing for quite sometime and he discovered he was “barred” from receiving and making calls.

Both who are using “line phones” or post-paid units under subscription of Smart Communications could not ascertain the problem as even the senator’s security aides were also rendered “incommunicado.”

Pimentel was prompted to buy temporary SIM cards and then tried to send again the same text message to his colleagues.

To be doubly sure, he decided to call one of them and there, he realized that even the cellphone of his fellow senators were experiencing the same “phenomenon.”

Not all of them are subscribers of Smart, others are known to be using the services of Globe or both.

It was then that it dawned on them that they were obviously being prevented from talking to each other, a situation which Pimentel said is a clear violation of civil rights.

“This is (virtual) martial law. They are trying to curtail freedom of the press and expression, which means that pretty soon, members of the media would be gagged (by this administration). That’s for sure,” he said.

“Even we senators, we cannot communicate with one another,” Pimentel stressed, adding there is reason to believe that this unprecedented incident was deliberate as communication lines of notable personalities and their known supporters were left “cut off.”

A telecommunications industry insider, when asked on the possibility of charges made by Pimentel, said unless the unit “hanged” or suffered a technical glitch, the problem described by the senator could arise or it could be that the post-paid line had been suspended because of unpaid accounts.

The source admitted there is indeed an encrypted program that mobile companies can gain access and allow them to suspend the use of the phone along with its features without the owner knowing it.

Pimentel, in his message to colleagues, suggested that Drilon should order the convening of emergency meeting late afternoon yesterday or even in the evening to challenge President Arroyo’s assault on civil liberties of the people.

“They are pushing the people to precipitate revolution. The people are merely gathering to commemorate the Edsa people power I but they (Malacañang) opted to declare a state of emergency to prevent the holding of rallies, to justify the order prohibiting the holding of rallies. This should not have happened had they allowed the activities to go on as planned by various groups. Angie M. Rosales

Earth to Pimentel... Calling Sen. Pimentel... Please respond... A simple "message sending failed" is already a virtual martial law for Pimentel? Give me a break! Try buying a prepaid SUN Cellular SIM Card and tell me if wouldn't experience your so-called virtual martial law everyday, every hour, every minute.

Pimentel's experience IS normal since his friendly gov't destablizers have caused lots of noise causing people to send a stampede-like text messages that may have clogged the telecoms' network.

A clear indication that OLDIES in our government should be removed.

Captain's Log Stardate -317152.49

After more than 10 years, WWE is back in the Philippines with WWE RAW LIVE TOUR! I've bought my tickets as early as December since I'm expecting Shawn Michaels... but he was removed from the lineup a few weeks before the tour.

I've watch the WWE Tour with my childhood(elementary-highschool... even college) friends, Glen and Mark. And good thing we're there at around 1PM, we've got the best seats at the Upper Box section!

The show was almost cancelled because of those fags rallying nonsense at the streets instead of stretching their muscle and bones to work. Stupid SOBs.

Anyway, the show still pushed through. Lots of Let's Go Cena! chants and Flair's WOOOOO! filled the stadium. A very memorable day in my life indeed, as I've seen my favorite wrestlers perform live plus all the crowd chants and wrestler's interactivity. I'm looking forward for another WWE Live Tour!!

Some pictures from the WWE RAW Live Tour (Feb 24 2006):

WWE Diva, Maria, with last year's BB. Pilipinas winners. (All three were boo'd by the crowd):

RVD doing a frog splash on Carlito:

Nature Boy Ric Flair talks about Filipino women... WOOO!!!

An Open Letter to Globe Telecom
Monday, February 20, 2006

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -317139.4

I've been a loyal Globe Handyphone Prepaid subscriber for the past 7 years and I've only changed my number once. I don't like my first number since it contains three consecutive 6 (0917-666xxxx). Luckily, I was able to swap my number for free at one of your business centers.

For the past 6 years, I've been using the same Globe Telecoms prepaid number and I've developed some kind of attachment to it. But the recent and rampant cellphone snatching made me realize that I might be saying goodbye with my 6 yr old number forever.

I usually take the bus to my soon to be office almost everyday and I've already witnessed 2 snatching incidents inside the bus. What if that happens to me? It will be very difficult for me to accept that the cellphone number that I've been using will be gone just like that.

Unfortunately for Globe prepaid subscribers, once your prepaid SIM card has been lost, it's lost forever. Unlike with Smart. You'll just have to present papers to prove that you're the original owner of the SIM card and they'll issue a new one with the same number.

Please Globe, do the same. Let us (prepaid subscribers) register our prepaid numbers so that if the SIM card got blocked via PUK or got lost somewhere, we could still use the same number. Give your prepaid users that "postpaid privilege". Let us retain our numbers. I've been part of the original myGlobe team and Sir Romy once mentioned that they're thinking of rewarding us with some kind of incentives. Now I'm asking for that incentive not just for myself, but for the entire Globe Handyphone Prepaid Subscribers.

Make this great idea, possible. Please.

Introducing... On Screen!
Saturday, February 11, 2006

Captain's Log Stardate -317113.56

I've finally decided to stop posting photos on my DeviantArt page and instead start my own photoblog. I haven't posted any pictures on my DevianArt site for more than a year anyways. :D

My interest in photography started when I was just about 5 years old when my mom gave me my very first 110 film camera. I wanted to take a lot of pictures but film and film processing is expensive so I just imagined the shots I wanted to take. When the digital era came, I was excited. With that technology, anyone can take pictures without film! On 2000, I recieved my very first digital camera. It was an Agfa ePhoto Smile 0.3MP (640x480). It can store 16 photos and umm... it drains its batteries faster than speedy gonzales :P And the picture quality is worse than my Nokia 6600 camera phone. Hey! It's the dawn of digital photography so no whining :P

Since then, I've taken over a hundred photographs that just sits in my hard drive and backup discs. Now, you can see some of them via my photoblog, On Screen. On Screen is the common command of a Star Trek captain when they wanted to see someone or something in space... so why On Screen? I love Star Trek. :)

Wowowee Stampede Aftermath

Captain's Log Stardate -317104.1

Most of you have already heard the news about the ULTRA stampede. 74 perished and more than 300 people hurt during the 1st year anniversary of ABS-CBN's Wowowee. What I find stupid is who the people (bloggers included) are blaming on what happened. They blame ABS-CBN for exploiting the poor, they blame Willie Revillame for making the people lazy and just beg for money through his show, and the dumbest blame off them all -- they blame President Gloria Arroyo.

Have they even watched a SINGLE episode of Wowowee? Balikbayans give some of their graces to Willie who in turn, gives them to the less fortunate ones who are in the studio. Embarass the people? I don't think so. Wowowee was made to entertain not only the viewers, but also the contestants. The only thing embarassing on the contestants that they were made to dance or sing, but that's it. Nothing more! Where's the exploitation there?

Some say that if ABS-CBN wanted to help, they should just give the money directly to the people without the singing, dancing, contests, etc. But I think that's more unethical since you're directly teaching people to become parasites right? Considering that most of these people are jobless, letting them join the contest and work their way up to the top prize is no exploitation at all. Really. At least they're working for it.

I've read in some forums that Willie crying in front of everyone is fake. That's just absurd. He hosts the show 6 times a week for 1 year. How do you suppose you'll feel if you're in Willie's place if you learned that more that 70 people died on your 1st year anniversary? Tsk.

If they find ABS-CBN guilty, then they should file a case against the Catholic Church. Every year, Quiapo Church organizes the Black Nazarene procession in which thousands of devotees flock. And almost every year, someone dies on that event. That procession is no different with Wowowee. The desire to get the jackpot prize. The only difference is that the Black Nazarene offers spiritual "prizes" instead of money or other material things Wowowee offers. But I think it's hard to file charges on those religious folks. God might be angry... tsss.

How about this:

Hahahahha! Blaming ABS-CBN is preposterous. I think they've prepared enough. More than enough compared with how Quiapo Church prepares.

Maybe you should look on the other side of things. Don't you think that we should consider ourselves, including the people outside of ULTRA? Blame the lack of discipline. DISCIPLINE.

And to those people putting the blame on President Gloria... Get a life.

Joey De Leon is an Asshole?
Monday, February 06, 2006

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -317101.25

Yesterday afternoon, I recieved the following SMS:

Ito ang reaction ni joey de leon sa eat bulaga last sat ng mngyari ang ultra stampede: "Dito na lang kayo sa amin! Dito mga buhay! Sa kabila (Wowowee)...(nagmuwestra ng gilit leeg).. - nakakalungkot na sa kabila ng pagddlamhati ng mga kbabayan natin, ganito pa ang mrrinig sa isang joey de leon, nsan n ang respeto nya sa naulila? Ipasa nyo to gang sa makarating kay joey de leon..
First I didn't believe it, but Karlo confirmed that Joey really did say those things. It's so sad how this asswipe manages to throw jokes and insults when a lot of people have already died. After what happened, he's still after the ratings. Tsk. Poor man. I know you'll all agree if I say he's an asshole.

Globe TXTNONSTOP is Permanent

Captain's Log Stardate -317099.88

Globe Telecoms finally decided to make their TXTNONSTOP promo permanent as reported on INQ7.net's article:

Globe's non-stop offer turns into a permanent fixture

First posted 01:49am (Mla time) Feb 06, 2006
By Clarissa Batino

STARTING FEB. 7, SUBSCRIBERS of Globe Telecom Inc. may send and receive unlimited text messages after the National Telecommunications Commission approved the carrier's Txt Nonstop offering.

Txt Nonstop is open to Globe's 13 million prepaid and postpaid customers since September.

Txt Nonstop allows unlimited texting within the network for P15 for a day, P25 for 2 days and P50 for 5 days.

Globe said that on the average, subscribers availing themselves of the promo send 25 to 27 messages a day.

For the P15 a day Txt Nonstop, Globe said it collects only 58 centavos for each message. Globe's revenue falls to 49 centavos for each message sent under the P25 Txt Nonstop, and it goes even lower to 37 centavos a message sent under the P50 Txt Nonstop.

"The commission poses no objection [to giving its permanent approval], subject to the condition that Globe shall publish the mechanics in the newspapers," said the NTC.

Text messaging has become the most popular and most affordable way to communicate. More than 30 million Filipinos who own mobile phones send more than 400 million messages a day for P1 or less with each message sent.

You can activate you unlimited SMS by keying in the following and send them to 2870:

For 1 day, send: TXTNONSTOP15
For 2 days, send: TXTNONSTOP25
For 5 days, send: TXTNONSTOP50
For 10 days, send: TXTNONSTOP100

Wowowee Stampede
Saturday, February 04, 2006

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -317094.17

Wowowee's 1st year anniversary has been greeted with bad luck as a stampede started early this morning at the ULTRA where the show will be held later this afternoon... According to DZRH, 54 people have been confirmed dead as of this writing. :(

I don't know what happened to ABS-CBN DZMM's "una sa balita, una sa public service". DZRH and other radio stations are reporting the event minute by minute while ABS-CBN's own radio station is talking about sugar canes... tsk tsk.

Captain's Log Stardate -317090.31

...posibleng delayed ang SMS mo. That's one of the possible effect if you gave your subscribers unlimited SMS plans. Unfortunately, with the entry of SUN Cellular's Unlimited Call and Text Plans, the other telcos followed suit. Unlimited services are prone to abuse. Subscribers tend to send a gazillion forwarded messages to their friends and their friends do the same with their friends, so the friends of their friend's friend do the same. Result? Network congestion.

Since yesterday, all of my SMS have been delayed 2-3 hours. Sigh. Discipline people. Discpline.
