Most of you have already heard the news about the ULTRA stampede. 74 perished and more than 300 people hurt during the 1st year anniversary of ABS-CBN's Wowowee. What I find stupid is who the people (bloggers included) are blaming on what happened. They blame ABS-CBN for exploiting the poor, they blame Willie Revillame for making the people lazy and just beg for money through his show, and the dumbest blame off them all -- they blame President Gloria Arroyo. Have they even watched a SINGLE episode of Wowowee? Balikbayans give some of their graces to Willie who in turn, gives them to the less fortunate ones who are in the studio. Embarass the people? I don't think so. Wowowee was made to entertain not only the viewers, but also the contestants. The only thing embarassing on the contestants that they were made to dance or sing, but that's it. Nothing more! Where's the exploitation there?
Some say that if ABS-CBN wanted to help, they should just give the money directly to the people without the singing, dancing, contests, etc. But I think that's more unethical since you're directly teaching people to become parasites right? Considering that most of these people are jobless, letting them join the contest and work their way up to the top prize is no exploitation at all. Really. At least they're working for it.
I've read in some forums that Willie crying in front of everyone is fake. That's just absurd. He hosts the show 6 times a week for 1 year. How do you suppose you'll feel if you're in Willie's place if you learned that more that 70 people died on your 1st year anniversary? Tsk.
If they find ABS-CBN guilty, then they should file a case against the Catholic Church. Every year, Quiapo Church organizes the Black Nazarene procession in which thousands of devotees flock. And almost every year, someone dies on that event. That procession is no different with Wowowee. The desire to get the jackpot prize. The only difference is that the Black Nazarene offers spiritual "prizes" instead of money or other material things Wowowee offers. But I think it's hard to file charges on those religious folks. God might be angry... tsss.
How about this:
"IF ONLY THE CATHOLIC CHURCH OFFERS A CONTIGENCY PLAN, NO ONE WILL DIE DURING THE FEAST OF THE BLACK NAZARENE."
Hahahahha! Blaming ABS-CBN is preposterous. I think they've prepared enough. More than enough compared with how Quiapo Church prepares.
Maybe you should look on the other side of things. Don't you think that we should consider ourselves, including the people outside of ULTRA? Blame the lack of discipline. DISCIPLINE.
And to those people putting the blame on President Gloria... Get a life.

I know! I was watching news days ago. Then behind the reporter there were people with placards. I noticed one placard that blames President Arroyo for the stampede. I was like, "wtf?". What are these people thinking? It's just plain stupid to blame it on the President.
As for people blaming Wowowee for exploiting their audience, well, there is a reason why noontime shows are targeted at a poor audience. Yes, they do want to entertain and help, but in the end showbusiness is still a business. TV stations want to make money and stay on top, most especially ABS and GMA. They wouldn't entertain and help these poor people if the network and the hosts weren't benefitting from it also. Ganon lang talaga, and that's really how it works. So you can't blame people for saying that Wowowee exploits their audience, in the same way that advertisements exploit consumers. It's really just one way of looking at it.
While in the end, you really can't hold a single entity liable for the deaths, I believe ABS could have upped their security. There was clear lack of coordination amongst their security personnel, they were badly stationed, and some of the people they hired (like the Pasig Police) weren't even invited to any pre-prod meetings. This is also what happened at the Redhorse Muziklaban where 4 people got killed in a stampede (which goes to show that people don't learn from each others' mistakes). Also, they knew Ultra could only hold 20,000 at most, but they still expected a crowd of 30,000.
I know the network never wanted this to happen, but I believe they totally could have prevented it if they hadn't been so casual.
*FYI- the same people who organized this event also organized the f4 concert where people got injured in a stampede. Go figure.

i agree with you! i was thinking about the same thing.
I think the reason why Willie cried is that he recognized one of dead people as one of his loyal studio guests
It's like seeing your own friend dead
I agree, I think it's really dumb that some people are blaming the president, and using the incident as a reason to spread "Patalsikin si GMA" texts.
