A 3G logo appeared on my father's phone while I was installing some applications this afternoon. I got excited since Globe has not launched their 3G services to the public unlike Smart. I was about to try browsing when the 3G logo disappeared. >_< Itching to try 3G, I loaded my Smart SIM and whoala! There's a 3G signal in our neighborhood! First thing I tried was to download the configuration settings for the phone. For Smart, just send SET 3G (phone model) to 211. (Ex. SET 3G 6630). Thanks to BNC-XE, I have the number of Smart Wireless Shangri-La's demo unit. And I've also learned that the operator of that unit is Chrystal. HAHAHA! And so I tried the video call...
The phone I'm using doesn't have a cam in front, but it can still broadcast a video to the other party using the camera at the back. The video quality? Just imagine you're watching a real media video stream on your computer about 3 years ago. Pixels baby. Pixels. The audio is good, almost the same as a regular voice call. Because of my excitement, I wasn't able to talk to the Smart girl on screen. I could see her but all she can see on her phone is my computer screen. Hahaha! She's cute BTW. :P
Next thing I've tried is the mobile internet. Browsing in 3G is faster compared to my Globe GPRS. A few seconds faster than browsing in dial up. But it's still slow. It took a while for our online store to load on the browser. Smart 3G's homepage has links to live streams and music videos. I tried to connect to the live streams and I had a hard time connecting to ABS-CBN and GMA-7's streams. I was surpised when the streams finally loaded, the quality of the videos and audio is clear. Clearer than a voice call.
I was also watching ABS-CBN on TV and the 3G streams on the phone was only delayed for about 8-10 seconds. Not bad.
For now, Smart 3G is free. You can literally make unlimited video calls to anyone who's on Smart. Enjoy them while they last. Expect a not so cheap rates when those telcos formally launch their 3G services. I'm hoping for a SUN Cellular unlimited plan though :D
