What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you see the blurry picture above? Sailor Moon. Right? RIIIIGHHT. GMA-7 has been showing teasers of 3 of their upcoming telenovelas for 2007 for a few days now and only today I was able to capture a screeshot of our TV. One of them is Super Twins, featuring Nadine Samonte and Jennylyn Mercado on an uber copycat of Sailor Moon's costumes. Umm maybe not too much. They did give em rip-off costumes some cape. :-|
Another is Asian Adventures with Robin Padilla and Angel Locsin who looks and acts like Indiana Jones and Lara Croft respectively. Last is Lupin which may not be considered as a rip-off since GMA-7 might bought the license of the franchise.
BUT SUPER TWINS?!! WTF were they thinking? Here's the blurry video I took of the commercial. Even though the video is blurred, you might think the video is from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon's Live Action trailer. If they didn't bought the Sailor Moon license, they're damned copycats. I don't remember seeing Sailor Moon fly. :-|

If you want the complete set of PGSM live action, I could burn you a fan-sub. Just give me blank DVDs :)
Sailor Mars is the HOTNESS!
EDIT: Here's the complete trailer. Now tell me, is that Sailor Moon or what? Lara Croft? Indiana Jones? :~)

I really don't think that Super Twins is a Sailormoon rip-off since that kind of costume is a common school uniform among Japanese teenagers.
If that is the case, then all schools in Japan ripped-off the Sailormoon anime.
do you think the long white gloves, big ribbons, and tiara are common japanese school uniforms? Sailor Moon costumes may look like school uniforms but they're really not the common design of school uniforms in japan. My mom lives near a high school in Japan and I tell you, those Sailor Moon costumes are not the common design.
If you look closely, Super Twins and Sailor Moon costumes are almost exact copies, from big exaggerated ribbons, boots, tiaras, and designs. That's a total rip-off. Instead of projecting new character images, viewers will remember Super Twins as two girls wearing Sailor Moon costume knock-offs.
The only Japanese uniform I know common is the Sailor Fuku.
the tiara and ribbon is a dead give away that it's a rip-off
So far, GMA has gotten away with insulting the intelligence of the lower classes.
This time, that strategy will backfire. Even the lower classes know who Sailormoon is. Expect their profits to drop even lower.
must tip ABS-CBN to get the license of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Live Action and pit it head-to-head against Super Twins. :~)
GMA sucks bigtime here! I hope people will realize that almost all of their shows are total ripoffs of foreign shows, wake up Filipino people!!!
Thank goodness for this post. I'm quite disturbed by the "rip-offs". I was starting to believe that GMA actually had unique plotlines with its fantaseryes, and then these three come along. Come on, why do they have to do local versions of known series? At the very least, they could have chosen better shows to "redo".
Don't get me started on the actors.
But, people, we should all know by now that we are a culture of imitators. Japan is also like that, but they managed to turn around their jologs-ness into something that's completely their own.
let's hope they do not think of a teleserye that looks like pokemon o_O
Lol, pinoys, support your fellow Filipinos instead of judging them quickly! The show haven't even started yet and all we hear is that Pinoys know nothing but to "imitate", "copy" and "rip-off"?
Someone even said that the foreigners or the international community will look down upon the Filipinos because of GMA 7 "copycat" shows, like c'mon...
Before anyone of us Filipinos say that its nothing but a "copy", "imitation" or "rip-off" of some other country's show, let's go digg and do a little research shall we?
I will repeat this, Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, and even the US of A all did it before and are continually doing it.
We Filipinos are so quick to say that "we copied this from the US" when it was in fact the other way around.
Plain BS and crab-mentality attitude again. Kaya hindi umaasenso ang pinoy, puro kontra ang alam.
Watch it first from beginning to end before you judge or "criticize" it.
Sheesh...

Richard Gutierrez playing Lupin is like Justin Timberlake playing James Bond. Vic Sotto would make a far better Lupin.
@john - when Capt. Barbell was announced, I was like.. "AWESOME! A MILLION PESO COSTUME FROM THE GUY WHO GAVE BATMAN NIPPLES!!". But when the pilot episode aired, instead of awing over the new Captain Barbell, I was just, “HUH?! Smallville?”. The red truck, the best friend turned enemy, etc. They’re all obvious copies that had an impact on every Smallville fan. And the hype of the show went no where. The million peso costume was clearly not suited with Richard’s neck, head and crotch. Even Herbert Bautista, who also played Capt. Barbell a few years ago and a Smallville fan, criticized the way Captain Barbell’s story was altered and patterned from Smallville.
Don’t get me wrong. I only criticize when there’s something obvious. Look at Super Inggo, the concept of Super Inggo’s Power Academy can be compared to Harry Potter’s Hogwart’s and the group of Pinoy Super Heroes teaming together can be compared to Justice League. But it all stops there. The writers manage to project a new image over concepts that have been done before and create a new, original and engaging storyline that even an adult would find entertaining. You won’t even see the traces of Justice League and Hogwart’s.
There’s Iza Calzado and Dingdong Dantes’ movie, Moments of Love. Its concept was obviously similar to a Korean movie, Il Mare. Whether the writers got the idea from Il Mare or not, they managed to change the idea a little bit. The main factor on Iza’s movie was a telephone linked to the future, instead of a mailbox that was used in Il Mare. The thought of Rip-off was there, but the changed of storyline made it one of the best Filipino movies made.
Encantadia, Etheria, Mulawin, Krystala, Zsa Zsa Zaturnah, Pedro Penduko have great plots too that can be really called their own.
But Super Twins is different. By just merely staring at Nadine Samonte and Jennylyn Mercado on the teasers, what movie/series first popped into your heads? Sailor Moon, right? I don’t need to watch that series from start to finish just to give my opinion because whatever story they write or create for Super Twins, everyone who has watched Sailor Moon every Sunday on ABC-5 a decade ago will always think of Sailor Moon. And those same people will remember Super Twins as two girls wearing Sailor Moon costumes.
The same with Asian Treasures, why use the outfits of 2 of the most popular icons of adventure on Robin Padilla and Angel Locsin? With the same storyline (adventure, relics, treasures, etc.). But I still have high hopes for this series though. Most adventurers around wear ALMOST exact copies of Lara Croft and Indiana Jones’ costumes. But still, Angel Locsin’s pose on their teasers closely resembles Lara Croft.
And about Lupin. Since GMA-7 may have bought the license to create a live action series, I don’t care whatever they want to do with the character. Make him gay, dress him like Robin Hood, give him a talking dog as sidekick, or make him an ogre like Shrek… I DON’T CARE. As long as the story is good and original, I will support and promote it all the way. The very idea of Filipinos producing the very first live action series of a popular Japanese cartoon is already an achievement that we could be proud of. But as Jerry Polence had said, Vic Sotto would have been the perfect guy for the role.
Ummm… Maybe I’ll still watch Super Twins and screencap every frame whenever they transform. Watyatink?
I'll agree to mike that vic sotto will be more appropriate for the role of lupin, and let's face it, GMA sucks bigtime
i can smell it... someone will post here, "hi nadine, ang ganda ng blog mo.."
you're right. Jennylyn's blog too, i guess.. GMA7 is focusing to cater the mangmang public, who didn't care to watch foreign TV shows. That's their winning formula right now. Is Lupin a matinee idol? Vhong Navarro is the best fit for Lupin. Ironic.
as one anonymous said "copied from the US", this wasn't a US creation rather a Japanese Sailormoon Series... but still, rip off is still rip off, filipinos are awesome, and we know we can do better than that...
Sigh, this is really a rip-off costume-wise, though! But if they would just make the plot even more believable and more original, well, why not!n But i don't give a damn on watching this show because it stars Jennylyn Mercado, the most irritating, expose-hungry, over-exposed person in showbiz landia!!!!!
Yes we did have some rip-off elements in our movies nad tv shows, but let's not do something like copying costumes and storylines.
Among the "fantaserye" our country has produced, i think "Pintados" was ground-breaking. It may be Sentai-like, but napapanahon ang theme ng show! And it showcased our Pinoy heritage! "Datu", "Diwata", "Mayumi", "Kidlat" and "Tato" defeate the forces of evil. I just hope they are kind enough to release this show again.
I will not necessarily support all things Pinoy. Talamak ang pangpa-piracy ng aking fellow Pinoys. Should I support it??
Baka balang araw, gagawa ang GMA ng isang live-action Doraemon ripoff called Doraymee. Pero ide-deny ng GMA sa presscon na ripoff ito ng Doraemon. Doraymee would just be a story about a little schoolgirl called Doray, who has a very inventive talking cat named Mee. Doray will explore the world with Mee like never before: with the help of the sound of music! Original story!
His name is Bobito!! Last quarter explosion!!
lol...rip offs ^^
SUPER TWINS...
not just the costumes, but the way they transform...
akazukin chacha...ring a bell?
then, it's not only the kapuso network who has these said rip offs...
the show "let's go" in abs cbn..kinda reminds me of a korean sitcom...("NONSTOP).
