Questionable Globe GPRS Charging
Saturday, March 11, 2006

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -317191.74

Last Tuesday while waiting for Lalaine inside the Holy Cross Church, I decided to go online on my Yahoo Messenger account via my cellphone using Globe Telecom's GPRS. I've disabled all images on the browser so my access charge would be minimize. Since Globe Telecoms claims that their GPRS charge is only P0.15/kb, checking some of my instant messages wouldn't hurt my remaining P60 prepaid credits. But I was wrong.

I've checked my prepaid credits before using my GPRS. You can clearly see here that I have P62.33 credits left in my account. I've disabled images and started using my Yahoo Messenger. I've exchange about 4 messages with Kuya Pau and after that, I immediately logged out.

When I checked my credits, it was only P7.52!!! WTF?! I couldn't believe what I just saw so I checked my balance again...

It's P22.35 this time. I've checked and checked for my prepaid credits and it never changed. It stood at P22.35. If you'll do the math, from P62.33, my credits fall to P22.35. That's P39.98 or equivalent to 266.53Kb!!! I've only sent brief messages to my cousin and he only replied with.. Yes and No. Heck, even a windows text file that has 1000 characters wouldnt even break the 5Kb size. But 266Kb for Yahoo Messenger? Tsss...

They're trying to introduce a new service called 3G, in which you could browse at broadband speeds on your 3G enabled mobile phone. I'm only using their GPRS technology... a technology that should have been perfected and yet, the way they charge customers is still questionable. What more if 3G becomes mainstream? A P10,000 bill of 3G access wouldnt be far from reality.

Useless "FREE" Rides

Captain's Log Stardate -317191.61

Went to Star City yesterday and brought all of my Star City "FREE" ride tickets. Turns out that only 1 ticket is allowed per person or just a total of 5 free rides. If you want to use the other "free" tickets, you'll have to pay another P60 (or entrance fee) for them. -_- Or they'll offer you to convert you "free" ride tickets to a Ride All You Can pass for only P150 instead of P250 -_-

Let's Go Baka-Baka on Starbucks and MRT
Thursday, March 09, 2006

Captain's Log Stardate -317186.06

*old lady photo, Photo taken and owned by Sidney

It's no secret that I hate rallies and street protests. But their latest gimick made me WANT TO POINT MY FINGERS TO THEM AND LAUGH.

Their new kind of protest --flashmobbing, where "mobs" are organized through SMS, emails, blogs, websites, etc. The Black Friday group organized this very stupid "thumbs down" protest to show their "concern" -INSIDE STARBUCKS -_- Doing their thumbs down protest while wasting money on an expensive drink and while wearing a stupid "PATALSIKIN NA! NOW NA!!" T-shirt.

Here are the instructions posted on their blog for their grand and stupid act:

Bulletin # 1 - Details of Flash Protest for March 3
Designated time and place of flash protest for March 3:
Any Starbucks Cafe, 6 to 7 PM

Plan of action:
1) Wear black
2) You and your friends proceed to any Starbucks Cafe near you anytime between 6 to 7 pm
3) Buy a drink. Each person should queue up at the counter, instead of just one ordering for the group.
4) After getting your drink, take a seat or just stand up outside the cafe and hang out for about 30 mins.
5) When your group decides it's time to leave, someone should give the cue and everybody should do the "thumbs down" sign
6) Disperse as peacefully as you came in

Suggested preparations:
1) Invite as many friends, or officemates, as you can
2) If you're an employer or a manager, invite all your subordinates to join you. Offer to "treat" them, if you can afford it.
3) Agree to meet in a place (not Starbucks), or if you're from the same office, arrange for carpooling
4) From the meeting place, proceed to Starbucks as a group. This will have more impact than just agreeing to meet at Starbucks individually
5) If you're staying in a city where there is no Starbucks, any other "cafe" or restaurant will do.

Invite as many friends and colleagues.

Let's paint Starbucks BLACK on Friday.

God bless,

enteng

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!! IF YOU ORDER WITHIN THE NEXT 30 MINS, WE'LL SEND YOU THE SUPER-UBER-MORONIC PICTURES OF PEOPLE DOING THE THUMBS DOWN SIGN... ABSOLUTELY FREE!
Black Friday Bulletin #2 - Details of Flash Protest for March 10
Designated time and place of flash protest for March 10:
MRT Station Ortigas - 6:30 to 7:15 PM

Plan of action:
1) Wear BLACK
1) Assemble at the nearest MRT station near you. Target to be at Ortigas by 6:30 PM
2) Buy a ticket going to Ortigas
3) Wait awhile for other groups in black. Agree to board the MRT at the same time.
4) While on board MRT, do the "thumbs down" sign before disembarking at Ortigas station
5) When you get to Ortigas, buy a ticket back to your origin (or to your final destination)
6) Join the other groups in the boarding area, but don't board yet.
7) Wait for 5 to 7 trains to pass by, each time flashing the "thumbs down" sign when a train arrives.
8) When the cue is given, everybody should board the train and disperse quietly.

Suggested preparations:
1) Invite as many friends, or officemates, as you can
2) If you're an employer or a manager, invite all your subordinates to join you. Offer to "treat" them after the flash protest, if you can afford it.
3) If you're from the same office, arrange for carpooling going to the MRT station or meet in a place near the station.
4) From the meeting place, proceed to MRT station as a group. This will have more impact than just agreeing to meet at the station individually
5) If see other groups in black at the station, link up and agree to go to Ortigas at the same time.

My apologies for those outside Metro Manila, for excluding you from this flash protest. We will try to organize one that will involve you. Even now, we're already planning for an International Black Friday Protest. Abangan...

Let's paint MRT Ortigas BLACK on Friday.

God bless,

enteng

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHhA! What else could they think of next? Eat live chicken in front of Seattle's Beast errr Best? Jump from the tallest building in Makati? Eat 10 pulvuron while simultaneously drinking Starbucks coffee? Hahahaha! The possibilities are endless...

Their MRT plan reminds me of the movie Suicide Club, which I just watched last night. The opening of the movie shows 54 school girls from different schools lining up infront of the train station platform, hold hands, and then started to chant "One... two..." then leaping to their death on the rail. To those organizing this flashmob, instead of doing the thumbs down sign, do the same thing from the movie. JUMP TO THE TRACKS OF MRT. Now that would be entertaining.

Top of the World... err Roof
Wednesday, March 08, 2006

Captain's Log Stardate -317183.53

For the 1st time in 10 years, I went on top of our roof this afternoon. Lalaine's cousin was painting our roof when it suddenly rained. An old hole from our roof finally gave in and water found its way inside an onto my laptop, cellphone and digital camera -_-

I was talking to Vem on YM when the water splashed right on the keyboard of my laptop. It was still raining hard when I went to the roof and attempted to apply vulca seal on the hole. But all of my attempts were futile. We waited for the rain to stop so we could apply vulca seal on the hole.

Luckily, my laptop is still alive and so is my digital camera and cellphone.

Bohol Here We Come!

Captain's Log Stardate -317177.63

Lalaine and I were supposed to go to Davao via Cebu Pacific's P10 promo, but seems that almost all of the tickets were already bought. Since Kuya Pau already bought tickets to Bohol, we decided to book the same flight. Unfortunately, all P10 flights to Bohol from Sept 16-18 were already taken. I was able to book a flight on September 26. :)

Any suggestions on places to visit on Bohol? :D

Don't Trust TV Gameshows
Saturday, March 04, 2006

Captain's Log Stardate -317172.43

The above image is a screencap I took last September 2005 during an Eat Bulaga game called Laban 'O Bawi. The one-eyed Greek mythology character is a Cyclops and Scott Summers is the Cyclops in XMEN --NOT SCOTT WALKER! Nice job researchers ;)

This afternoon, I received a text message from my friend Glen and it's another blunder from a gameshow. This time it's Game Ka Na Ba. He said that Kris Aquino asked the contestant to enumerate 18 of the WWE Superstars who came last week for the WWE Raw Live Tour. According to Glen, Kris rejected Mick Foley as he didn't wrestle during the tour. He DID wrestle on the second day.

And when Kris gave all the names, Chavo Guerrero and Ashley were included. I was at the tour and Chavo and Ashley were not included in the lineup. Instead of Chavo, Eugene replaced him.

It's clear that Game K N B's researchers based their answers from TicketNet's lineup instead of the actual tour. I wonder if the answers to their previous questions are 100% accurate...

The P10 Airplane Ticket Effect
Friday, March 03, 2006

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -317169.33

My cousin has purchased two roundtrip tickets from Cebu Pacific in response to their P10 fare. The normal price of the two round trip tickets from Manila to Tagbilaran is P14,000... and he got the tickets for only P3,304! That's almost 75% off!

Now I'm thinking of buying tickets but I don't know what destination would I choose. Hmm...

Manila - Cebu
Manila - Iloilo
Manila - Bacolod
Manila - Tacloban
Manila - Tagbilaran
Manila - Dumaguete
Manila - Kalibo
Manila - Roxas

Manila - Davao
Manila - Cagayan de Oro
Manila - Zamboanga
Manila - Cotabato
Manila - Butuan
Manila - Puerto Princesa

My trips to other countries is greater than the number of trips I've had in the Philippines... So help me choose a perfect destination for my P10 (plus tax and surcharge)!! I must book a flight before March 8 to avail the P10 promo fare. :~)

Open Letter To Our Leaders

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -317169.1

Bong Austero wrote an open letter to our leaders worth reading:

Open Letter To Our Leaders

Dear Tita Cory, Senators, Congressmen, Businessmen, Media people, Leftists, and all Bleeding Hearts Out There:

I am angry. And I know that there are many out there who are angrier than I am for the same reason. And that reason is simple. I am sick and tired of all you guys claiming to speak for me and many Filipinos. I feel like screaming every time you mouth words about fighting for my freedom and my rights, when you obviously are just thinking about yours. You tell me that the essence of democracy is providing every citizen the right to speak his or her mind and make his or her own informed judgments, but you yourselves do not respect my silence and the choices I and many others have made. In other words, your concept of democracy is limited to having your rights and your freedoms respected, at the expense of ours.

I am utterly flabbergasted that you still do not get it: we already responded to your calls, and our response has been very clear - we chose not to heed your calls to go to EDSA or to Fort Bonifacio not because we do not love our country or our freedoms or our rights, but precisely because we love our country even more. Because quite frankly, we are prepared to lose our freedoms and our rights just to move this country forward. You may think that is not correct, you can tell me all the dire warnings about the evils of authoritarian rule, but quite frankly all we see is your pathetic efforts to prop up your cause. You tell me that you are simply protecting my freedoms and my rights, but who told you to do that? I assure you that when I feel that my rights and my freedoms are at a peril, I will stand up and fight for them myself.

You tell us that GMA is not the right person to lead this country because she has done immoral acts. As someone who sees immorality being committed wantonly in many ways every day and by everyone (yes, including the ones you do), I may have become jaded. But you have not been able to offer me any viable alternative, while GMA has bent over backwards many times to accommodate you while continuing to work hard despite all the obstacles and the brickbats you have thrown her way. From where I sit, she is the one who has been working really hard to move this country forward while all of you have been so busy with one and only one thing: to make sure she does not succeed. So forgive me if I do not want to join you in your moral pissing contest. Forgive me if I have chosen to see things from another perspective. You say she is the problem. I say, we are the problem, more to the point, I think you are a bigger problem than she is. Taking her out may solve part of the problem, but that leaves us with a bigger problem: you. That is right, YOU!

While I felt outraged that she called a Comelec official during the elections and that she may have rigged the elections, I have since then taken the higher moral ground and forgiven her. Yes my dear bishops, I have done what you have told me to do since I was a child, which you say is the Christian and moral thing to do: forgive. Especially since she has asked for forgiveness and has tried to make amends for it. Erap certainly has not apologized and continues to be defiant, continuing to insult us everyday with his protestations. Cory has not apologized for her incompetence but we have forgiven her just the same because like GMA, she has worked hard after all.

I know you do not think that GMA's apology was not enough, or that she was insincere, or that that apology should not be the end of it, but please spare me the hypocrisy of telling me that you do so for the sake of protecting the moral fibre of society. The real reason is because you smell blood and wants to go for the kill.

Well, I have news for you. I do not like her too. I did not even vote for her. I voted for Raul Roco. But as much as I do not like her, I do not like you even more. I may not trust her, but guess what, I do not trust you even more.

You know why? Because all you do is whine and sabotage this country. You belittle every little progress we make, conveniently forgetting that it is not just GMA who has been working so hard to achieve them. Every single day, we keep the faith burning in our hearts that this country will finally pull itself out of the mess and we work so hard to do that. Every little progress is the result of our collective effort, we who toil hard everyday in our jobs. Yet, you persist in one and only thing: making GMA look bad in the eyes of the world and making sure that this country continues to suffer to prove your sorry point. In the process, you continue to destroy what we painstakinly try to built. So please do not be surprised that I do not share your cause. Do not be surprised that we have become contemptuous of your antics. You have moved heaven and earth to destroy her credibility, you have convened all kinds of fora and hearings and all you have done is test our patience to the core. For all your effort, you have only succeeded in dragging us further down. I say enough.

Don't get me wrong. I am not asking that we take immorality lying down, or that we let the President get away with anything illegal. But you have tried to prove your accusations all these time and you have not succeeded, so it is time to let things be. Besides, you are doing something immoral as well if not utterly unforgivable. The Magdalo soldiers are consorting with the communists - the same people who have been trying to kill democracy for years. Cory has been consorting with Erap and the Marcoses.

So please wake up and take a reality check. In the absence of true and genuine moral leadership, many of us have decided to cast our lot with the President, even if we do not like her. A flawed leader is better than scheming power hungry fools who can not even stand up for their convictions in the face of an impending arrest.

Your coup attempts and the denials that you have consequently made only underscore what we think is true: you are spineless and unreliable people whose only defense is to cry suppression when your ruse do not work. You are like bullies who taunt and provoke, but cry oppression when taken to task for your cruelty.

I would have respected you if you took the consequences of your actions like real heroes: calmly and responsibly instead of kicking and screaming and making lame excuses. You say you are willing to die for us, that you do all these things for the country and the Filipino, but you are not even willing to go to jail for us.

Come on, you really think we believe that you did not want to bring down the government when that is the one and only thing you have been trying to do in the last many months?

We love this country and we want peace and progress. Many among us do not give a f*&k who sits at Malacanang because we will work hard and do our share to make things work. If you only do your jobs, the ones that we elected you to do, things would be a lot simpler and easier for every one.

The events during the weekend only proved one thing. You are more dangerous and a serious threat to this country than GMA is. We have seen what you are capable of doing - you are ready to burn this country and reduce everything to ashes just to prove your point. If there is something that we need protection from, it is protection from you.

S.C. Austero

*Sigh* R.I.P. Philippines.
