Paging Driver Eric Part 1

Captain's Log Stardate -316074.03

The grandfather of the Garci Tapes. Dubbed as the “DRIVER ERIC” series. 3 friends who had nothing to do during a power outage in the year 1995 tried pranking Easycall, a pager company then. The series I received on email contains 14 audio clips.

The original description from the email I received:

"Ang inyong pinapakinggan ay mga kaganapan sa buhay ng tatlong magkakaibigan na itatago natin sa mga pangalang “PEPE”,”BOYONG” at “ANDOY”.

Taong Mil-nuwebe syentos nobenta’y singko, isang gabing madilim, walang kuryente. Namataan ni Boyong ang “in” nung mga panahong yaon. Isang “pager”, na pag-aari ng kasintahan ni “PEPE”. Nagkatinginan ang tatlong tarantado at dun nagsimula ang lahat..."

Here are the first batch of the calls. Enjoy.

Nanay, Tatay...

Globe Telecom Modifies UnlimiTXT Rates
Saturday, January 27, 2007

Captain's Log Stardate -316073.18

Globe Telecom is set to unveil their new price scheme for the UnlimiTXT service of Globe Handyphone subscribers. Currently, Globe Telecoms offers unlimited texting between Globe subscribers for P15 for one day, P25 for two days, and P50 for five days. The scheme will cost subscribers more. Here's the rumored rates for the new Globe Unlimitxt/SulitTXT:

  • P25 - 1 day unlimited texting between Globe subscribers plus P0.75/SMS to other networks.
  • P20 - 1 day unlimited texting between Globe subscribers plus P0.90/SMS to other networks
  • P15 - 1 day unlimited texting between Globe subscribers from 6:00am to 5:00pm (Daylite)
  • P10 - 1 day unlimited texting between Globe subscribers from 10:00pm to 5:59am (Off-Peak)

My friends who're text addicts are always subscribing to UnlimiTXT50, unlimited texting good for 5 days. The service usually costs them P300/month for unlimited Globe-Globe texting but with the new scheme, the least they'll get is around P450 a month on "daylite". Off-Peak is useless with them since they work in the morning. Expect the new rates on Feb. 1, 2007.

Another win for Globe! Greedy bastards.

Good thing Lalaine and I have a prepaid SUN Cellular account. Our SUN Cellular accounts cost P150 each a month, and already includes SUN to SUN unlimited texting, P15 SMS to other networks, and a free 4 hour call to any SUN Cellular subscriber. Yan ang sulit!

Super Twins at Wikipedia
Friday, January 26, 2007

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -316071.19

My blog, Mike's, Karlo's, Pinoy Rikey, Anime Kabayan, etc. have been tagged as sources on Super Twins' Wikipedia entry by a user named Coolzone. But it seems that blogs are not allowed as sources and even the images are now being disputed. I don't know anything about how wikipedia works so I'll leave this matter to Mike, since he has more experience about these things than me.

Maybe they're also the same fanboys trying to wipe these info off Wikipedia? Another reason to not rely on Wikipedia for research.

Twilight GameCube

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -316070.97

When I bought Glen's Nintendo GameCube last December, it can't read "other" games. I had it modified at EYO last January 2 and still didn't solved the "problem". I've tried cleaning the lens, but still, the cube cannot read some of my "games". Then I chanced upon a site that suggests to adjust my GameCube lens' potentiometer.

With the help of my father, we (I mean he) started to disassemble my poor GameCube last week.

Here's the potentiometer (image from Mod That Cube), it's a very small knob that adjusts the intensity of the GameCube's laser beam. So my college digital multi-meter finally had its use. I used it to measure the resistance of the knob and it was clocked at 609 ohms, way way higher than the recommended range of 170 ohms - 210 ohms.

After a few tweaks, we've finally got some of the "games" my GameCube won't read to work. Rocky and I have been playing The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for 23 hours and we're not even halfway!

So if I'm not posting regularly, you know what I'm doing :~)

Star Trek Online

Captain's Log Stardate -316070.67

The closest thing to getting into Star Fleet Academy and commanding your very own starship, well, at least in an online world. Perpetual Entertainment is set to unveil anytime this year their bold plan to unleash a Star Trek-themed MMORPG. FINALLY!

Stardate 77021.1: A New Era

For over 40 years, the world of Star Trek has entertained, challenged, and inspired the imaginations of young and old alike. Now, behind the well-secured doors of an unassuming San Francisco office building, Perpetual Entertainment has assembled a crew of the entertainment industry's finest to create the most ambitious realization of the Star Trek universe to date: Star Trek Online.

Helmed by game industry veterans from Electronic Arts, Blizzard, LucasArts, Activision, and Rockstar, as well as legendary creative talents from the Trek television shows and motion pictures, Star Trek Online will catapult players into a massively multiplayer experience unlike all others. Familiar friends, terrifying new enemies, exotic locales and dangerous missions will come to life as players rise through the ranks of Starfleet and come together to protect the ideals - and the very existence - of the Federation.

Prepare to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life forms, defend civilizations, and boldly go where no one - and no game - has gone before.

Enlist and Engage.

As of today, no BETA plans have been made so playing the BETA is still out of the question. Bridge Commander was good, Star Trek: Encounters sucked, so I just hope that this Star Trek MMORPG will turn out good.

I heard that Star Trek Legacy for the XBOX 360 got high scores from Gamespot, too bad I don't have an oversized DVD player, I mean, an XBOX 360. :~)

Set your phasers to stun cadets! Enlist here.

Dinosaur!! RUN!!!

TOKYO - A species of shark rarely seen alive because its natural habitat is 2,000 feet or more under the sea was captured on film by staff at a Japanese marine park this week.

How many "undiscovered" creatures do you think still creep underwater? We're interested in exploring space, yet we still have no clues on other creatures that lurk deep in our oceans :~)

Fanboys Defend Super Twins Costume
Thursday, January 18, 2007

Captain's Log Stardate -316048.8

Fig. 1

(UPDATED) I guess some fanboys would do anything just to tell everyone that GMA-7's Super Twins' costume is original and did not rip-off the Sailor Senshi concept. A Wikipedia entry about Super Twins states that:

Super Twins is an upcoming show of GMA Network. The story is about magical twins.

The current TV trailer reveals that the "twins" are wearing battle uniforms similar to those of the Sailor Senshi. Though this uniform is common in Japan, the bright orange color is not and is identical to the uniform worn by Sailor Venus.

Fig. 2

Not identical? What the? It may not be completely similar to Venus' costume but they are STILL Sailor Senshi costumes (compare Fig.1 and Fig.2, click to enlarge). Even Sailor Moon cosplayers wear costumes not as identical as the one showed on TV, and still manages to show the world that they are wearing Sailor Moon costumes. Fanboys. Tsss. Another reason that you shouldn't rely on Wikipedia for research.

I don't know if GMA-7 was shocked with the reactions of Sailor Moon fans that they decided to alter some of the Super Twins' costume. But still, Nadine Samonte and Jennylyn Mercado look like Sailormoon cosplayers. And as Ade said, "Nope, still retarded." :~)

And to those who keeps on saying that the Sailor Senshi costumes are common in Japan, THEY ARE NOT. The common uniform they're referring to is the Sailor Fuku, the uniform being worn by Maria Ozawa above :~) Sailor Senshi costumes ARE elaborate copies of the common Sailor Fuku, FYI.

To the folks who can access Wikipedia, could you do me a favor and edit the contents of Super Twins? Destiny's still slow and I cannot open the EDIT PAGE link :~(

(UPDATE 01/22/2007 23:58) Shixi XIE posted a lengthy entry regarding "The Root Causes for the Lack of Originality in the Philippine Entertainment Industry" There were really good points on the entry and I couldn't agree more. But the costume part, that's where I have to disagree.
"...For crying-out-loud, whoever said that Super Twins must have or must look closely similar to SailorMoon is plain (censored)."

Heck, even this guy looks like Sailor Moon.

If they are to catch the "sailormoon appeal", they should have just bought the license in the first place, instead of (ugh) copying 99% of the Sailor Senshi costume and telling us viewers that we "inspire them" so they give us the "best" (best ripoff?). It's not about crab mentality. They STOLE a concept and calls their it own. It's like letting a criminal go when we don't say a word regarding this issue and let them "experiment" and "develop ideas".

I've already said before, they bought the Lupin license, then let them do something exciting for Lupin. Do whatever they like as long as it's original then I'll support it all the way. It's already 2007, internet age, and we don't even need to tell the whole world about our copycat friends, the whole world will tell us. They have eyes.

The Pirate Bay Wants to Buy an Island
Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -316043.75

Not exactly a real island but internet torrent site, The Pirate Bay, wants to buy a man-made off-shore installation called The Principality of Sealand in a bid to avoid copyright laws.

"It's not only about Pirate Bay, it's more about having a nation with no copyright laws," one of those behind the site, who gave his name only as Peter, told AFP Friday.

"For Pirate Bay it would be awesome to have no copyright law. All countries today are based on the old economy and old ideas and we want to do something new," he added.

How about we consider selling Mindanao? :~)

The Php990 MOTOFON F3
Monday, January 15, 2007

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -316040.41

Motorola is set to launch (or have they?) a new mobile phone in the Philippines that looks pricey (SLVR look-a-like) but would only costs you less than a thousand pesos. The MOTOFON F3 (F3c for its CDMA version) is aimed at consumers who have yet to own a mobile phone. It features a new Clear Vision Display, also called the eletronic paper, that uses less or almost no power, extending the battery life of the phone to 12 hours standby and 8 hours talktime. It's also one of the thinnest phone, measured at 9mm.

The only drawback of this phone is the big 2-liner display. It's like reading your SMS messages on a big scientific calculator display :~(

• Voice prompts in local languages
• Intuitive icon-based user interface
• Stylish thin design
• Durable housing for optimal performance despite dust and sun
• High-contrast screen using new ClearVision Display (CVD)
• Large font size for easy readability
• High-volume setting for call clarity in loud environments
• Embedded polyphonic ringtones in 32 voices
• Ability to download ringtones
• 4GV audio codec giving carriers a substantial capacity increase to further lower system costs

Perfect as backup phones to be used on the SUN Cellular network or as gifts to your grandparents... it's cheaper than a used Nokia 3210 :~)

Anyone knows where to buy this?

via Manila Times

(UPDATE: 01/16/2007 2:55PM) I've emailed Motorola Philippines regarding the availability of the phone and here's their reply:

Dear Sir

Thank you for your email dated 15 January 2007.

Firstly, we would like to thank you for your interest in the latest MOTOFONE F3 handset.

At this present moment, we do not have any official information on the launch date of the above-mentioned model in the Philippines. Please do visit our website www.motorola.com.ph for constant updates on upcoming models as well as look out for ongoing press advertisements.

Should you have any further enquiries, please feel free to contact our Customer Service hotline at 1800 1651 0415 (reachable within Philippines).

Yours sincerely

Smart i-mode Service Soon?
Sunday, January 14, 2007

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -316037.77

If this news is any indication that we'll see those cutesy NTT Docomo mobile phones in the Philippines, then I don't care if NTT Docomo buys every share of Smart!

NTT DoCoMo announced that it plans to acquire approximately 6 million shares of PLDT, equivalent to 30 billion yen ($254 million) from an affiliate of First Pacific, PLDT's largest shareholder.

DoCoMo expects to finalize the specific terms of the transaction after discussions with First Pacific.

Smart, with DoCoMo's backing, intends to launch the i-mode service and expand W-CDMA services in the Philippines and promote international roaming services between Japan and the Philippines.

GMA-7 Alters Super Twins Costume

Captain's Log Stardate -316037.04

(UPDATED IMAGES 01/15/2007) I was surprised when I saw GMA-7's full page ad on Inquirer today where they showcased their upcoming shows for the 1st quarter of 2007. Of course, Super Twins is there. GMA-7 might heard the negative feedbacks Super Twins had when their teaser was first shown that they decided to alter some features of the Sailor Moon costume. You can see that colors have been added to the new costume and some were removed. The 2 top images are from their original teasers and the middle-bottom image is from their Inquirer ad. (See Fig.1)

The big ribbons were replaced with flower shaped jewels. The Sailor Moon tiara has also been replaced with a crown-like jewel. The neck belt / collar from Sailor Moon has also been removed from Super Twins. The gloves were also given some color as opposed to the original rip-off. (See Fig.2 and Fig.3)

Now I wonder how they'll transform... :P~

I've Got A Hater :~)

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -316031.38

I saw a link from Noel's Blog where a guy was furious about my predictions for 2007. He apparently took my entry too seriously that he sounded and assumed like a fortune teller himself. I wanted to elaborate more but I need to go somewhere. Just head over to his site and read his entry and comments.

Hey Mike! Why haven't you told me about this earlier? :P

(UPDATE 01/12/2007 23:30): Hohkay.. just got home. I'll repost his entry:

Un-predicting 2007

I've made up my mind about 2007: this is about as good as it gets. That said, I still lurked around to see what other people thought would happen in 2007. Some are plain annoying, merely stating the obvious. Pat Robertson predicts mass killing -- now that's Nostradamic.

In my lurking I found a blogger hamed Jepoy, who in his blog (designed to look like a Star Trek TNG dashboard) has a picture of himself in a strange superhero costume (Enteng Kabisote anyone?).

Needless to say, his predictions are remarkably troublesome. Not because they are morbid or fantastic (nothing impossible about any of them), but because they exhibit the kind of discrimination that scares me the most -- a prejudice, proudly worn, stitched together with class-based hate.

Among his predictions, he writes:
2. More Filipino idiots will be online, and would be jumping into international message boards showing how stupid they aer [sic], dragging us with them.

7. And the poorest of the poor will contribute largely to the continued growth of our population due to the fact that they have way tooo much time on their hands for their favorite pastime *bleeep* We should consider to export these whiners as human slaves to other countries. We'll definitely earn a lot since our country will have less useless whiners around.

9. More Filipino artist will confess that they are ghey.

In these three statements, he's managed to diss on the illiterate, the poor, and the homosexuals, not to mention showing contempt for his own race. I am troubled not only with the candidness of his bigotry, as he seems unashamed to hide his lack of upbringing, but at the fact that his predictions read more like mono-maniacal chest-thumping than a fearless look into a crystal ball. None of them are staggeringly original. He predicts massive cheating in this years election. Yeah-duh.

This blogger seems to agree with all this:
With twenty million Filipinos going online in 2007, he’s probably right. This is why I’m brutal to n00bs, especially n00bs in Philippine business.

Unpredictably scary people I'd never want to meet. This, or any year.

Not entirely the way I wanted to start 2007 :~) First off all, that post of mine was inspired by my all-time favorite internet super hero, Captain Obvious. This guy treats my post seriously and actually thought I was a guy dressed in a stranged super hero costume who makes a living out of fortune telling. OMFG R U SERIUS??? LOLOLOLO!!!!!11.

I would have taken this guy seriously until he said that the picture on my profile is me wearing a super hero costume (and even suggested it was of Enteng Kabisote). heh. I'm having thoughts that when he actually see me, i mean Vic Sotto, he might call him Jepoy! Coolness.

He questions three of my "predictions" and labeled it as an insult to the illiterate, the poor, and the homosexuals. Insult? That slave thingy was merely a satire of the truth. Idiots online are everywhere. Maybe if you're confined to your Photoshops and Macs you'll be clueless on what we're talking about.

And the homosexuals. What's wrong in admitting someone's gay? Got a problem with that? Maybe it's you who had a bad experience with these folks from the past that subconsciously triggered your reaction to my "prediction" #9? Or maybe you're gay? There's nothing wrong in admitting. ;)

Are you out of the country too long that you cannot even recognize Vic Sotto's face anymore? It irks me when some self-righteous individual barges in and started acting like a know-it-all savior of some sorts when in fact, they themselves left their own country only thinking about themselves. While the people they claim they protect suffer and suffer in this horrible country of ours.

Please, don't question the way of my upbringing because I rather stay in this country than go somewhere else. Unlike you who just blabbed and watched comfortably on your TV about Typhoon Reming's victims, I tried to help the people you claim I insulted. And it was not as easy as 1-2-3. And no, our school never had bullies since we were well educated than you assumed.

And about planting disrespect on this blog, at least I don't openly disrespect other people's beliefs.

Oh btw, don't believe everything you read on the internet.

Testing Email to Blog

Captain's Log Stardate -316030.14

It's been days since I was able to login to my Blogger account. Thanks to that earthquake that damaged the underwater cable facilities in Taiwan, browsing has been hell. I can barely open my emails on Google and Yahoo!, I cannot open my AdSense account, and I cannot post new entries on my other blogs. There goes the Adsense money *sigh*. OKAY. I'm making money out of Adsense so scrap that online store of mine. Just kidding :P

Good thing my father gave me complete season box sets of Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: The Original Series to kill some time. And there's also my stubborn Nintendo GameCube who wont read the games I downloaded... woops! I mean, my GameCube won't play "homebrew" games. :~)

I'm trying to post this entry via Blogger's email to post feature and let's see if this will be published. You can always visit my other blog at VOX
