My Adsense Check Has Been Stolen
Friday, March 02, 2007

Captain's Log Stardate -316167.05

I've first heard the horror stories about these lost AdSense checks from Marc's blog last year. During that time, I already received my first AdSense check but I haven't deposited it yet. And when I finally decided to open a dollar account with Banco De Oro, I was required to submit several IDs, Billing Statements, and other documents supporting my identity.

I thought that it was safe for me to choose regular postal mail since the checks are in US Dollars. Depositing and en cashing dollar checks are more difficult than checks in peso, and so I thought it was. I was wrong.

My check issued last Jan. 25, 2007 should arrive this Feb. 20-25, but I haven't received any mail from Google until today. When I checked that status of the check, behold. The check was cleared on Feb. 26, 2007!

Status of my lost Adsense check:

I gave it the benefit of the doubt since I don't know a thing about checks and banks. Maybe, the date is just the date when I should deposit the check. Then I remembered the very first check I received. I got it sometime in August and just deposited it together with my Nov.2006 check on December 13, 2006. That's also the day when I opened a dollar account at Banco De Oro.

Status on the first 2 Adsense checks I received:

HOOOHKAAAY. The date is the date when the check was cleared within the bank! But still, I cannot accept reality. Reality that my check has indeed been stolen and deposited by another person. So again, I opened up my Google Adsense account and checked the status of the last checked I received.

The last Adsense check I received. Deposited last January 18, 2007:

ONLI IN DA PILIPINS. ONLI HIR. I've already emailed Google about this and I'm waiting for their instructions.

Sure there are a lot of not-so-trusty postal guys, but how the hell did they opened and deposited the check with my name on it?! When Money4Blogs issued a check with my nickname, Banco De Oro declined to accept it. Even the China Bank branch here, where we knew all the tellers and managers and also knew that my nickname is Jepoy, declined the check. They advised me to ask Money4Blog to re-issue a check with my complete name on it. So with that kind of security checks, how in the world have they opened a dollar account using my name?! AND THEY EVEN DEPOSITED A CHECK!

Anyway, I'm not yet sure if the check has indeed been stolen and deposited. Not until Google confirms it. But if ever my check ends up in Dagupan, XXX na to o kaya Imbestigador!

UPDATE (03/03/2007 09:18): Google replies:

Hi John,

Thank you for your email.

According to our records, your check has already been deposited.

I am requesting that a copy of your check be sent to us. Although it may take up to 10 days to receive it from the bank, I will be sure to email it to you when it becomes available. Once you have the check copy, you can confirm if the signature on the back of the check belongs to you. If not, we will be happy to help you open up an investigation with Citibank.

The Google AdSense Team

I've already put my payments on hold and asked them to cancel the last check they've mailed last Feb. 28. Look's like I'm joining the DHL Club :D

Sorry to hear about that man! It's really fishy how the checks got cleared with your name on it. Could be an inside job with someone in the bank or the one who encashed your check is a pro or a syndicate is involved in this case.

Philippine Postal Service and Customs really sucks! That's where you'll find most of the corrupt government officials in the country.

Hope Google reimburses you and that you get the money that you worked hard for.

@jaypee - yep. it's an inside job and the guy from philpost or customs may know somebody within the bank.

Wow, that really sucks! I also think it's an inside job. When you started receiving the regular mails from Google, I'm sure the philpost people got too nosy- they smelled kaching-kaching! I hope you get your money back.

Unfortunately, I doubt XXX or Imbestigador could even comprehend the idea of AdSense.

Given local TV's ignorant technophobia, they might just denounce it as some sort of newfangled Internet scam. :(

@chateau - yeah it sucks.

@mike - LOL, did you saw the news segment in Bandila last feb 26 where a photographer was scammed in eBay? The victim bought a camera from ebay for about 80% cheaper from retail. They called the scammer.. a hacker. =))

how these guys opened bank account? simple.... postal guys knew how...

Posted by Blogger Jepoy on Saturday, March 3, 2007 at 3:00:00 PM GMT+8:
why didn;t I think of that postal id. :~) I thought by having may checks in USD, thieves will have difficulty of actually encashing the check. Google said I have to wait for about 10 days for them to send the scanned copy of the check and where it was deposited. Then, that’s the only time they could help me.

My other check has already been sent and these postal bastards are now waiting for their prey.

@jepoy, which post office are you expecting the cheques from? I'm currently compiling instances of these Adsense cheque thefts to write a related article.

Posted by Blogger Jepoy on Monday, March 5, 2007 at 2:14:00 PM GMT+8:
@pinoymoneytalk - quezon city central post office.

Oh noes! Your checked has been hacked! Suxxors! LOLZ! But seriously, hope you get this cleared up dude. And once you do, beer party for everyone?

Posted by Blogger lateralus on Monday, March 5, 2007 at 7:20:00 PM GMT+8:
That sucks, Jepoy. I hope things get ironed out.

For the mean time, I'll just use my paypal account to collect on my adsense earnings (two years from now). hehe

Posted by Blogger Jepoy on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 11:49:00 AM GMT+8:
@baddie - and i'll invite sam milby :D

@lateralus - is paypal available for adsense?

Posted by Anonymous Thoughts In Binary on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 6:43:00 PM GMT+8:
And yet another victim. I'm sorry to hear about this bro. Just wait for Google's reply and they will send you a scanned copy like this. Make sure to call the bank. You'll most probably get your money back like me, but the damage has been done. I'll check your site for updates, maybe we have the same guy.

Posted by Blogger lateralus on Tuesday, March 6, 2007 at 7:05:00 PM GMT+8:
Ay, sorry, hindi pala. hehe

Posted by Blogger Jepoy on Sunday, March 11, 2007 at 2:54:00 PM GMT+8:

hi there, i've seen your post on eBay. I've read somewhere in eBay DB about this kind of scam. Checks have been stolen in our local post office. The powerseller who posted it recommended that you should open a bank account under a Business Name. Those thieves will have a hard time encashing the checks because they have to present lots of business documents to the bank.
