Used Chopsticks in China sold as new
Thursday, August 30, 2007

Captain's Log Stardate -316662.85

If those worm infested chocolates, formalin dipped rabbit candies, and lead containing toys aren't enough, another scandal has hit China. This time, used chopsticks being sold as new and without any disinfection of some sort.

BEIJING (Reuters) - A Beijing factory recycled used chopsticks and sold up to 100,000 pairs a day without any form of disinfection, a newspaper said on Wednesday, the latest is a string of food and product safety scares.

Counterfeit, shoddy and dangerous products are widespread in China, whose exports have been rocked in recent months by a spate of safety scandals, ranging from pet food to medicine, tires, toothpaste and toys.

Officials raided the factory and seized about half a million pairs of recycled disposable bamboo chopsticks and a packaging machine, the Beijing News said.
The owner, identified only by his surname Wu, said he had sold the recycled chopsticks for 0.04 yuan a pair and made an average of about 1,000 yuan ($130) a day.

Wu, who had no license to sell the goods, said he had sold 100,000 pairs a day when business was good.

China, on track to overtake the United States this year as the world's second-largest exporter, lacks a basic food safety law and the manpower to enforce food and drug safety regulations at home or for export. Imports are generally carefully scrutinized.

A lack of business ethics and a spiritual vacuum after China embraced economic reforms in the late 1970s have been blamed for unscrupulous business practices and corruption.

In Guangzhou, capital of booming Guangdong province in south China, Mayor Zhang Guangning vowed to bankrupt serious violators of food and product safety.

The Hong Kong owner of a Guangdong manufacturer at the centre of a recall of Chinese-made toys by U.S. giant Mattel had committed suicide, according to Hong Kong media.

In the latest in a series of tit-for-tat measures, China has accused the United States of exporting substandard soybean shipments to China and requested "effective measures" be taken.

Friendster Porn

Captain's Log Stardate -316660.31

I seldom open my Friendster account, unless someone asks me to. And that's what I did today when Glen pointed out some anomalous "Porn Reviews" in our profiles.

Introduce porn to millions of Filipino minors that use your site. Nice job Friendster!

UPDATE: It seems like a "virus". View an infected profile and your profile gets infected. View other user's profiles who are clean, and you'll "infect" their profiles as well.

EarthBrowser - Google Earth with Weather
Thursday, August 16, 2007

Captain's Log Stardate -316622

I love maps, especially Earth maps with clouds and weather updates. Google Earth made it possible for anyone with an internet connection to visit places anywhere on the planet right infront of the computers. But what if you use the same technology as Google Earth and overlay almost real-time clouds, earthquake reports, volcanic eruptions, and more? The result would be the fantastic EarthBrowser from Lunar Software Inc.

It's functions basically as the early version Google Earth but with added clouds and other interactive elements. EarthBrowser is not free, but you could still enjoy it as demo for as long as you like. As for me, seeing the path of storms and cloud formation is enough. No need to buy the complete software.

This software is better than the Yahoo! Toolbar-Powered Internet Explorer that our own weather bureau uses. Hey PAGASA, US$23.95 is cheap!

You may download EarthBrowser here.

The Synergy1 Phone Calls
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

Captain's Log Stardate -316621.08

So I finally got a call from those Synergy1 / Nu Skin freaks. I heard them way back since Lalaine's cousin got "scammed" by these guys. Anyway, you can read about these scammers here, here, here, and here. Basically, signs of a scam from these 4 blogs also manifested on our call. She talks fast, told me she's from a multi-national company, I was recommended by AMA University, and I was really a good leader of some sort that she was interested to introduce a business proposal. No, she wasn't recruiting me for a job that the other 4 bloggers experienced. She proposed that I invested on their business and the details are top secret.

She then requested me to attend a business seminar tomorrow so she could explain in detail their proposals. I then asked her directly to stop telling me that the business is top secret and just tell the name of her company. I told her that MLM companies irritates me that if her company just turns out to be one when I arrived on their office, I won't hesitate to report her to SEC (ok I'm joking). I also told her that some of my friends have already been victimized by a company that sells skin products somewhere in Ortigas. She asked me what company is it, I said I forgot, though I already opened their website on my browser while we're talking.

She then kept on telling me to attend the seminar she has scheduled and she needs to go now since she'll be in a meeting (mmkay). I said that no company, no seminar. The she finally spilled the beans, "Sir John, our company is Synergy One". BINGO!

I told her, "ooohh.. that company... that was the company I was telling you. Do you really believe I'm that gullible to believe that you'll be in a meeting later? I bet you'll be sitting there for the next 6 hours calling whoever who's on your list.." She then said that she'll be hanging the phone since I'm not interested.

I asked her where did she get my number. She said it was from a database. If it was on a database, how could have my school recommended me? Hmm... Dang! I can't recall her name.. anyway, she was still talking some sh*t when I hanged up the phone.

Some info on this MLM sh*t:

Globe Telecom Launches New Logo
Monday, August 06, 2007

Captain's Log Stardate -316596.95

I thought I was watching a new show on ABS-CBN but it turns out to be a promotional show or video to showcase Globe Telecoms' new logo and supposedly new services. Just give us P10/30mins browsing rates and ability to receive MMS email and you don't have to rebrand your service and spend millions for publicity.

Globe's website also sports a new look, very similar to how Smart's new website organizes its contents. Smart's website is still better though.

Captain's Log Stardate -316585.27

The news about a Nintendo Wii hack that causes the Opera browser of the console to crash turns out to be a vulnerability to all computer systems running a Flash player with versions lower than 9.0.47. To see if you need to update, click this YouTube video link and if your browser crashes, then its time to update to the latest version of the Flash Player ;)
