I blogged about i-mode last year and was anxious if I could get my hands on those cutesy i-mode clamshell phones. No more worries today, SMART is finally bringing i-mode to the Philippines on March 15 2008 but will be initially limited to Smart Gold subscribers.
Smart rolls out i-mode™ service to postpaid subscribers
[February 27, 2008 / Manila, Tokyo] - As part of its thrust of offering messaging options that answer a wide array of subscribers’ needs, leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) announced that the i-mode™ service will be available beginning March 15.
i-mode is a mobile email and Internet service launched by Japanese mobile communications leader NTT DoCoMo, Inc. in February 1999. Today it is used by more than 47.8 million subscribers in Japan. Through NTT DoCoMo’s global partnerships, it is also available to mobile subscribers in 15 other countries in Asia and Europe.
In the Philippines, i-mode will be available exclusively to Smart Gold subscribers. Under the i-mode service, Smart Gold subscribers will have access to i-mail, allowing them to send email via their handset in the same simple way SMS messages are sent, and at the same cost of only P1 per message. As technologies develop and user-lifestyles evolve, Smart plans to make available more attractive and practical content and information to i-mode users in the Philippines. i-mode is expected to enhance Smart’s suite of cutting-edge wireless services, all designed to address the varying needs and lifestyles of the cellular leader’s subscribers.
“We understand and seek to cater to the rapidly evolving needs of today’s mobile phone owners. Smart provides not only cutting-edge connectivity to the biggest network in the country, it also offers access to world-class services, such as i-mode,” says Danilo J. Mojica, head of Smart’s Wireless Consumer Division.
“We will continue reinforcing our partnership and work closely with SMART to deliver an array of communication and entertainment services with compelling values and convenience,” says Mr. Takeshi Natsuno, Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Multimedia Services, NTT DoCoMo.
