Smart Communications launches CURE as üMobile

Captain's Log Stardate -315382.87

After announcing the acquisition of Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprise, Inc. (CURE) last April, Smart has finally re-launched CURE as ümobile with a prefix of 0999 and some interesting features.
Advertising-based mobile phone company launched in RP

Asia's first mobile phone service to be funded largely by advertising was launched in the Philippines Monday, company officials said.

Called the U-mobile service it will offer services to invitation-only subscribers virtually free of charge depending on how many advertisements they read on their phones.

Targeting "the youth and yuppies" aged between 15 to 34, the service expects to have between 60,000 and 100,000 subscribers by year's end, said marketing head Ardie Balderrama of Connectivity Unlimited Resource Enterprise.
A wholly-owned subsidiary of PLDT unit SMART Communications, the Philippines' largest wireless provider, the company will operate independently of SMART but will use some of its facilities.

U-mobile subscribers who read the ads on their mobile phones will receive credits on their pre-paid mobile phone bill.

The company hopes to carry advertising from makers of personal care products, fastfood restaurants and even financial service companies.

About 45 percent of Filipinos own mobile phones, it added.

Here's an interesting ümobile to ümobile SMS rate: P0.15 per SMS. That's way cheaper than the current SUN to SUN SMS rate of P0.50 (provided you are using SUN iTXT)!

SMS rates of ümobile to other networks is also cheap at P0.75 per SMS. International SMS is pegged at P8.00 per SMS. ümobile's internetwork MMS rate is P0.50 per MMS!

ümobile is also supporting fring by default. fring is a mobile internet service & community that enables you to access & interact with your social networks on-the-go, make free calls and live chat with all your fring, Skype, MSN Messenger, Google Talk, ICQ, SIP, Twitter, Yahoo! and AIM friends using your handset’s internet connection rather than costly cellular airtime minutes. With ümobile's "partnership" with Smart, internet access will be cheap at P10/30minutes.

ümobile is currently on invite only basis. You have to be young or a yuppie. ümobile is exclusively for 15 to 35 year old individuals who are residing in the Philippines. Once you receive an invite code, which is rare according to CURE, you must enter it on ümobile's website and sign up.

ümobile invite codes can be given by current ümobile subscribers or by what CURE calls "code givers". Taken from CURE's website,
How to score yourself an invite code?

If one of your friends is already a ümobile member then by all means use every sweet talk method in the book to get yourself invited.

If your friend still hasn´t forgiven you for the time you stuck him with the bar tab, then drop by one of our ümobile events and if you match our criteria, you can snag an invite code from one of our code givers.

Scour the web for our Code Giver who is known to have precious invite codes to give away during random times.

What in the world are Code Givers?

Code Givers are official members of the ümobile community who are authorized to give out invite codes to non-members. You may encounter people who are posing as Code Givers, so here´s how to spot the real invite codes:

* Code Givers can only be found during ümobile events and are dressed in distinguishable outfits
* Code Givers will never sell you an invite code because these are for free. Beware of those that try to sell you any ümobile invite codes. If it ain´t FREE, it ain´t ours.

Receiving an invite doesn't mean you'll get your free SIM card though. ümobile is currently opened to people aged 15-35. So if you're 36 years old or older, you're screwed mcduck.

Hey SMART err... I mean CURE, how about an invite? I have several phones lying around that needs a "free" SIM card. And I have a long tolerance for SMS Spam both from Globe and Smart. üüü

If someone from CURE ever reads this, you can reach me via my email address or mobile phone 0919-4157787. By the way, I'm 25 years old :~)
