Photoshop Alternative: Paint.NET
Monday, August 25, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315650.17

Looking for a cheap alternative to Photoshop for your Windows machine? Sure there's GIMP but it's also a resource hog like Photoshop. How about a photo editor with an installer that can almost fit your old school 3.5 floppy disk? Introducing Paint.NET

Paint.NET is an open source, raster graphics editing program for Windows, developed on the .NET Framework. Originally created as a Washington State University student project, Paint.NET has evolved from a simple replacement for the Microsoft Paint program, which is included with Windows, into a powerful editor with support for layers, blending, transparency, and plugins. It is often used as a free alternative to Adobe Photoshop. It is available under the MIT License

Paint.NET is primarily programmed in the C# programming language, with small amounts of C++ used for installation and shell-integration related functionality. Its native image format, .PDN, is a compressed representation of the application's internal object format, which preserves layering and other information. Excluding the installer, text, and graphics, Paint.NET is released under the MIT License and is open source software.

Minimum System Requirements:

* Windows XP (SP2 or later),
or Windows Vista,
or Windows Server (2003 SP1 or later)
* .NET Framework 2.0
* 500 MHz processor (Recommended: 800 MHz or faster)
* 256 MB of RAM (Recommended: 512 MB or more)
* 1024 x 768 screen resolution
* 200+ MB hard drive space
* 64-bit support requires a 64-bit CPU that is running a 64-bit version of Windows, and an additional 128 MB of RAM

Download Paint.NET here

If you don't have .NET installed, you can download .NET Framework 2.0 here.

ABS-CBN's XXX Exposes Victim's Identity
Sunday, August 24, 2008

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -315647.34

Well, sort of.

Last night, I was watching ABS-CBN's XXX featuring the video sex scandals that proliferate the internet and mobile phones. Of course these topics aren't new. Programs such as ABS-CBN's XXX or GMA-7's Imbestigador ocassionally feature individuals seeking assistance to stop their sex videos or photos from spreading.

One of the victims featured last night is a 20 year old girl. She's seeking the help of ABS-CBN to remove her nude pictures posted on a blog.

Her story started when she met someone (apparently a tomboy) inside a chatroom claiming to be an agent of a modeling agency abroad. The tomboy was looking for a lingerie model for her agency and this girl was a perfect candidate. But before she qualifies as a possible model, she must first submit her pictures... naked.

I don't know how this tomboy convinced this girl but she did send her pictures, dozens of them. And so her nightmare started. This tomboy turned out to be an extortionist of some sort.

The girl's nude pictures were posted on a blog a few days after. This blog shows at least 40 naked pictures and describing the girl as a "girl for hire". The blog also contains her complete name, addresses, contact numbers, school, and the "services" she's supposedly offering.

She then received a call (or was that a text or chat) from the tomboy demanding P100,000 (Tim Cumper is that you?). The tomboy was demanding 100,000 pesos or the pictures and blog will be circulated on the internet. ABS-CBN tried to do an entrapment but this tomboy is slippery than Ernie's rubber ducky. All means to communicate with this tomboy failed.

Mike Abundo often calls ABS-CBN as Philippine TV dinosaurs. And he's right. Throughout the interview, ABS-CBN blurred the girl's face and even altered her voice to keep her identity secret. But ABS-CBN made a big mistake. They showed a partial unblurred view of their monitor and I saw something "useful" to start my search.

It took me under a minute to find the blog (see screenshot above). So every efforts of ABS-CBN to protect the identity of the poor girl are all useless. I now have access to her pictures, address, numbers, school etc. I even found her Friendster account and Yahoo! email address. One of her addresses is just a few hundred meters away from my university.

And the probability of catching this "tomboy" becomes even slimmer since she managed to evade all the entrapments ABS-CBN planned. If that tomboy was watching XXX last night then I bet she'll be even slippier. Imagine, broadcasting that episode without even asking for the assistance of computer experts or even the National Bureau of Investigation.

Finally after exhausting all possible efforts, ABS-CBN decided to contact Google via email. And we all know that asking Google to remove a BlogSpot blog is useless.

Tim Cumper's website is still up and running despite repeated attempts of Ms. Noemi to contact Google. She even asked the help of Google Philippines' Ms. Aileen Apollo and still Tim Cumper's website remains.

I pity this girl. She asked the help of ABS-CBN who in turn exposes her identity accidentally. She was gullible enough to fall for this tomboy's trap. And finally, she's helpless since Philippine laws have no teeth on the world we call cyberspace.

Calling Senator Loren Legarda... Wanna help this young girl? :P

Cheap Travel Offers by Trusted Tours and Attractions
Saturday, August 23, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315643.95

Lalaine has been bugging me to join a vacation tour outside the Philippines since tralala. This started out when she was reading several online travel guides.

First she wanted to join a Hongkong tour but when she saw my vacation pictures in Los Angeles, she changed her mind. Now she wants to join Los Angeles tours this Christmas season.

My vacation in Los Angeles is probably one of the best vacations I ever had. First it was the first time that I saw my mom in 10 years and at the same time, I was traveling with my great grandma. Second, Los Angeles probably has one of the most number of Filipino population.

One time I was shopping for a Nintendo 64 RF Modulator. I've scoured every inch of one of the malls looking for this device when I finally reached an Electronics Boutique outlet. I was explaining to this guy what I was looking for when suddenly he answered in Tagalog. Both of burst into laughter after learning that both of us are Filipinos.

City tours will definitely punch a hole in my wallet but good thing is that Trusted Tours and Attractions offers discounted tickets to the best sightseeing tours in 23 cities across America.

So if you're planning your next vacation like me and Lalaine. Sign up for the Trusted Travels eNewsletter and enter to win a $150 Magellan’s Gift Certificate - Offer ends August 31st, 2008.

Protect Your Gmail Accounts from Hacking
Friday, August 22, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315641.16

To those who frequently use public Wi-Fi spots to check their Gmails, you may want to enable the SSL feature of Gmail by default.

A tool that automatically steals IDs of non-encrypted sessions and breaks into Google Mail accounts has been presented at the Defcon hackers’ conference in Las Vegas.

Last week Google introduced a new feature in Gmail that allows users to permanently switch on SSL and use it for every action involving Gmail, and not only, authentication. Users who did not turn it on now have a serious reason to do so as Mike Perry, the reverse engineer from San Francisco who developed the tool is planning to release it in two weeks.

To enable you Gmail's SSL by default, click Settings on the upper right hand corner of your Gmail account

A new page will load. Now click the General tab and scroll all the way down until you see this:

Select the 'Always use https' option then click save. SSL will now be enabled everytime you log in on your Gmail account.

Thursday, August 21, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315639.19

Have you ever bought something brand new (like a digital camera or a mobile phone) and when you turned it on contains a picture or video of someone? Well someone from UK just did. The iPhone shipped to the UK contains pictures of a cute girl who apparently works at an iPhone assembly plant.

And with less than an hour before the official launch of Globe Telecom's iPhone 3G, who knows. You might see this cute girl in your iPhone 3Gs... Anyone know her instant messenger ID? :~)

Sun Cellular Launches WAP-based Push Email
Friday, August 15, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315622.91

Months after their press release, SUN Cellular finally launches its mobile push email service from OceanLake as Sun Mobile Office. Sun Mobile Office is a push e-mail solution that let's you receive alerts for every new e-mail received from your internet accounts to your Sun mobile phone. This service allows you to sort and retrieve important emails anytime, anywhere.

You will need atleast a WAP/GPRS enabled phone to use this service.

Some key features of Sun Mobile Office include the ability to configure a maximum of 3 of your widely used POP3 and IMAP4 (Yahoo!, Gmail, Hotmail, ISP Mails, etc.) e-mail addresses into one distinct e-mail account. Compose, reply and forward e-mails anytime, anywhere. Set significant tasks and get reminders ahead of time through your mobile phone. And the best thing, get SMS notifications on new and important e-mails so you will always stay connected.

You can also read attachments like Zip, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF up to 1MB in size. If the file exceeds 1MB, you will need to download the file to your phone or memory card.

Sun Mobile Office does not require you to install any software on your phone. All transactions will be done via SMS and WAP connections. You will receive an SMS informing you of your new mail with the corresponding link. The link will then take you to you Sun Mobile Office's inbox which houses a maximum of 3 POP3/IMAP4 accounts. Your Sun Mobile Office inbox has a shared capacity of 30MB.

Sun Mobile Office has a recurring subscription charge of Php100 per 30 days. The subscription charge includes SMS notifications and access to your Sun Mobile Office inbox with 30MB capacity. What's not included is the GPRS/3G charge you incur while reading, composing, setting up schedules, etc. while on the WAP page.

Since Sun Mobile Office requires you to connect to a GPRS/3G connection, everytime you open your Sun Mobile Office you will be charged the standard Sun Cellular rate of P0.10/KB. Kinda expensive don't you think? It will be better if they change it to a time-based-per-minute scheme like what uMobile is doing (P0.33/min).

Below are the main features of Sun Mobile Office:

• Consolidate 3 POP3/IMAP emails
• Send, Forward, Compose email
• Read Attachments (Images, Zip, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, etc)
• Customize the Mail Alert.
• Contact Management.
• Calendar Management.
• 48-hour e-mail retention

If you want to sign up for Sun Mobile Office, point your browsers to http://smo.suncellular.com.ph

FAIL: Twitter removes SMS updates
Thursday, August 14, 2008

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -315619.54

Just as when Rocky's enjoying his phTwitter + SMS Update setup, Twitter decides to remove its SMS update feature on countries outside UK.

Let's start with the bad news. Beginning today, Twitter is no longer delivering outbound SMS over our UK number. If you have been receiving SMS updates from Twitter via +44 762 480 1423, you'll notice that they've stopped and you may want to explore some of the alternatives we're suggesting.
Before we go into more detail, here's the good news. Twitter will be introducing several new, local SMS numbers in countries throughout Europe, in the coming weeks and months. These new numbers will make Twittering more accessible for all the folks who have been using SMS to send long-distance updates through our UK number.

Twitter will continue to negotiate with mobile operators in Europe, Asia, China, Australia, The Americas, and other regions to forge relationships that benefit all our users. Our goal is to provide full, two-way service with Twitter via SMS to every nation in a way that is sustainable from a cost perspective. Talks with mobile companies around the world continue. In the meantime, more local numbers for updating via SMS are on the way. We'll keep you posted.

Hey Globe, how about negotiating with Twitter to establish a local Twitter number to send out updates?

Two Americans Love Jollibee

Captain's Log Stardate -315617.69

Remember Pamie and her group of Ugly Americans? Last July 2008, my old post about Pamie and her adventures at Jollibee registered 150-200 unique page views. All of the links came from one of the threads at PhilMusic. Apparently, two new brave Americans have dared to eat at Jollibee and posted their "unique and odd" experience online.

They ordered the usual Chickenjoy, Yumburger (which Pamie described as "Wendy's goo"), Jolly Spaghetti and the Pancit Palabok.

But unlike Pamie and her friends, these two brave souls kinda liked most of Jollibee's menu and kept the dissing and insult at a minimum.

Jon (the blog owner) called the Spicy Chickenjoy "TORTURE WHITEY spicey". I agree on the spicy part. Jollibee's spicy chicken is too spicy even for Lalaine, who happens to be a bicolana. What I don't get is "whitey". Maybe the color of the chicken is pale? His tongue might burn when he eats Bicol Express. Anyway, he enjoyed eating Chickenjoy.

He was turned off by the appearance of the Pancit Palabok but ate the whole thing. He also liked the taste of Jollibee's Filipino style Spaghetti and Peach Mango Pie.

They also ordered a Jollibee Pearl cooler. FYI, I haven't even tasted Jollibee's cooler but I do love pearl shakes especially Zagu. Americans apparently don't like the idea of chewing something you drink from a straw. But if they're living in a tropical country like ours, things might be different :P

Though Jollibee's menu is similar of those in America, let's always remember that Jollibee was created with the Filipino taste buds in mind. Jollibee placed branches outside the Philippines where there are lots of Filipinos missing the taste of home. That's their primary objective. Appealing to western tongue is just secondary.

Jon's original post has already been removed from his blog. Maybe because of the angry comments from Filipinos? I dunno. Anyway, I made a copy of the original post with some of the early comments intact:

Welcome to JOLLIBEE, may I take your order?
Wednesday, April 30, 2008

So Trix and I were driving to the Studio Where She Works, down Beverly, in what the locals refer to as "Thai-town" due to the large population of asian folks in that particular 'hood, when suddenly she started pointing wildly.

"CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!" she shouted. "It's called Jollibee! Oh my god, I pass this place every day. Check out the sign!"

"Yumburger? CHICKENJOY?" she said, excitedly. "That place just HAS to be from Japan, or something. That sounds like the craziest English mistranslation ever."

So after some research -- yeah, we're the sort of people who get overexcited about stuff like this -- we figured out that the Jollibee chain originates in the Phillipenes (which accounts for the crazy-ass product names). And furthermore, even though their American menu doesn't include such fucking completely insane items as the TUNA PIE:

...which, by the way, is a DESSERT ITEM -- please vomit now -- it DOES in fact, include some pretty weird stuff including the aforementioned Yumburger and the inexplicable Chickenjoy, as well as such delightful stuff as Jolly Spaghetti and the PALABOK FIESTA, which looks like the thing that attached itself to Mr. Spock's back in that one Star Trek episode.

So of course, we had to eat there. That is to say, I had to eat there, because I'm the kind of freak that risks horrible intestinal problems in the name of Creative Blogging. Don't say I never work for you, folks.

So I ordered the Spicy Chickenjoy (still unsure what it was, exactly) and the Palabok Fiesta, and Trix ordered the Non-Spicy Chickenjoy with the Jolly Spaghetti and a Jollibee cooler. My Spicy Chickenjoy -- turns out "chickenjoy" = "fried chicken," by the way -- wasn't just spicy, it was "TORTURE WHITEY" spicey, and it burned my lips and hurt to eat, but was actually quite joyful anyway. The Palabok Fiesta tasted like nothing in the Western Selection of Flavors and Spices, and I actually found it kinda gross, but I ate the whole thing anyway. Trix' Spaghetti had little sliced hotdogs in it as well as three gallons of sugar, and was really quite damn delicious.

Weirdest of all, the Jollibee cooler contained those little round tapioca nuggets you find in bubble tea -- you've had bubble tea, right? I HADN'T until my very worldly oldest friend in the world Adam introduced me to it!! -- and was really quite fucking odd, drinking something that you then had to CHEW. Bizarre but tasty.

Best of all: the peach/mango pie, which I guess they figured was more palatable to Western tongues than the Tuna Pie. Oh, it was good. It was write-home good. I shoulda just ordered that.

My stomach hated me later on that evening, and both of us felt like we were oozing grease from our pores all night. "YOU SMELL LIKE BAD CHICKEN," Trix kept saying, and I kept saying "Well, YOU smell like some other weird item we had for dinner tonight!" And this morning my stomach hates the shit out of me, but that's probably partly due to the fact that we abruptly switched off the Atkins diet of late, and my stomach hates me when I add in carbs.

Trix hiding from the Jollibee Jolly Bee. As well should you.

So in summary: Jollibee is FUCKING ODD.

I love bubble tea. It's amazing and gross all at the same time-and somehow that excites me. But, that bee is damn sinister. Reminds me of the stay-puft marshmallow man . . .
do NOT cross the streams.

- April 30, 2008 11:30 AM LAP said...

I would have to eat there too. And I sometimes find bubble tea wonderful (when it's like a smoothie/slushie consistency and not like strawberry quik with tapioca) but it's always interesting for sure. Experience worth having without a doubt. Do they make Jollibee t-shirts?

- April 30, 2008 11:42 AM Jessie Smith said...

Unfortunately, bubble tea creeps me out. The straws are so large, one can drown in that sudden rush of liquid. Especially, when the bubble bits start to slosh to and fro.

The taste?

There is no taste. It's like cold sugar goo with chewies. I need either really sour or sweet but not watered-down versions of either.

Thanks guys for taking one for the team. Please don't ever take me to Jollibee. That logo is enough to make me think twice, no matter how much I love spicy odd food.

- April 30, 2008 12:28 PM Patrick said...

i drove by that place every day when i had a job on the westside. that whole side of town is dirty and overcrowded and strange... everything to discourage an appetite. the jollibee "chickenjoy" never enticed me. the only place to eat near there is Langer's Deli on Alvarado and 6th st.

- April 30, 2008 12:34 PM Ashley! said...

What about the YUMBURGER! That's what I would've ordered...well, if I ate meat.

I dont really like Pinoy food, but damn Toi on sunset has some pretty incredible Thai plates.

You're like the Andrew Zimmern of crazy LA Thai Restaurants.

- April 30, 2008 4:23 PM MissTrixi said...

The 'ghetti was like Chefboyardi took a drunken tip to exotic. There were actually 3 kinds of meat, and the sauce was soooo sweet. LOVED my shake though. I expected the tapioca bits to be small, but they were big globs the size of dimes. And yummy in an odd way. I was fearful that the globules journey through the straw was a direct reflection of what my arteries were doing.

I'm always willing to try something new, and that Jollibee stare has been taunting me for weeks now.

I don't even want to tell you what the Palabok Fiesta reminds me of, suffice it to say it has a deep resemblance to something my dog did once. Yikes!

Yes Jon. I have been to the Philippines twice and I avoid Jollibee now...they are very popular in the Philippines as "their" McDonalds and they serve more traditional Pinay foods like the pabalok etc...they are proud to have it in America so let it be...Filipinos love sweet spagheti sauce for some reason..probably because they have to preserve the tomato sauce in the jar with sugars.

- May 3, 2008 9:46 PM thelastnoel said...

LOL. I LOVE Jollibee. Then again, I'm biased. Chickenjoy! Oh, joy.

- May 3, 2008 9:47 PM thelastnoel said...

Oh, don't EVER order dinoguan. It's nicknamed chocolate meat--it ain't chocolate

We all have different tastes. I for one like the same KFC Famous Bowl that Jon has been eating, but I actually hate the current taste of Chickenjoy. And there's this Filipino dish Dinuguan. It's made of pig's blood and I rather kill myself than eat it. But you won't hear me rant on the internet or someplace on how disgusted I am. I can call those who eat Dinuguan vampires, but I didn't.

It's about respect.

You don't like the food, say it then shut up. Pamie and her friends lack this quality. They practically insulted millions of people who eat at Jollibee everyday by telling everyone that those who eat Yumburgers are actually eating Wendy's goo.

Oh by the way, Jollibee just bought a stake in a US-based company :)

5 Secret Things About Me: The Disclosure Meme
Monday, August 04, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315592.1

I was tagged by Ka-Edong more than a month ago and I guess this is a bit late. But not as late as 1 year like yours Ka-Edong :P

Anyway, this tag is about the disclosure meme. I usually don't disclose stuffs about me online, but what the heck.

Here goes...

  1. Spiders. I'm afraid of spiders. Even the tiniest spider creeps me out. I think my fear of spiders started when I was about3 or 4 years old inside the bathroom. A very big spider landed on my face while I was pooping. Imagine the horror I experienced during that time. Though I hate spiders, I love Spiderman... LOL.
  2. I failed Electronics 1 in College. Yes, I still remember the face of that damn ECE professor of the College of Engineering. He failed 29 out of 31 students enrolled in our class. The two students who he passed are Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) students while the rest of us are Computer Engineering students.
  3. Almost got jailed because of our school president. Level-Up! Games offered our school organization, AMA microsystems, a free concert featuring Sugar Free. As org president, I signed all the papers with two of my officers. When the concert day arrived, AMA Computer University VP BUENA GRACIA CANZANA (yes I will disclose your name too a$$wipe) decided to cancel the event.

Level-Up! Games already installed the sound and light system at the university gym when this knucklehead decided to cancel the show. Her reason? "Exam week is near...". I remembered the face of Ate Joy of Level-Up! while arguing with our OSA director, Mr. Christopher Manaois. She threatened Mr. Manaois that she'll have us (me, Karlo, and Red) jailed right at that very moment since we signed a contract. Good thing one of our advisers managed to convince Level-Up! to move the event after the exam week.
  4. I love Mathematics. Well I used too. I was attending special math classes every Saturday at Quezon City Science High School when I was still in elementary. My love for math is one factor that I decided to take up Engineering in college.
  5. I collect video game consoles. Whether it's working or not, I collect old video game consoles. My passion for video games started on Atari's Pong. So if you have an old video game console lying around, you might want to consider selling them to me. :~)

Now it's your time to disclose some secrets. I'm tagging:

Another priceless ABS-CBN moment - abs-cbnNEWS.com expires
Sunday, August 03, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315589.21

What's more stupid than claiming copyright on videos that's under fair use? How about forgetting to renew your domain? Apparently, Mike is right, ABS-CBN is too dumb to think of that.

ABS-CBN's flagship news website abs-cbnNEWS.com is offline not because they are encountering server problems or server attacks, but some wise guy from ABS-CBN Interactive forgot to renew their domain.

ABS-CBN News website will be back very soon

We’re experiencing some minor technical difficulties with the ABS-CBN News website. Because of this, we’d like to extend our apologies to Kapamilyas who are affected by this incident. Trust that we’re working hard to put it back online at the soonest possible time.

In the meantime, please feel free to drop by the ABS-CBN News discussion forum.

Thank you for your patience, Kapamilya.

What do you expect from guys who call their new website BETA then releases the 2nd version and name it ALPHA?

Anyway, abs-cbnNEWS.com has a "beta" version located at http://news.abs-cbn.com. In the meantime, I'll try to backorder this domain. *evil laugh*

Solid Broadband Corporation Launches my|screen LCD TVs
Friday, August 01, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315584.39

One year after I posted a scoop on GameOPS about Solid Broadband Corporation's my|phone, here's another juicy news. The owners of Destiny Cable Internet (mydestiny) is introducing another product on their "my" series called my|screen.

You guess it right, it's a cheap and re-branded monitor/LCD TV.

Solid Broadband Corporation will release 4 screen sizes: 16 inches(MYS-16), 22 inches(MYS-22), 32 inches(MYS-32), and 42 inches(MYS-42).

Key features include a stereo system NIC AM/A2, Port S-Video, HDMI optional, Full HD 1080P, USB Connectivity, PC input, PIP/POP function, and Multi-Language menu. Prices on these LCD TVs are not yet available but you may call your local Global Destiny Cable TV agents and inquire about the P888/month package for 2 years that includes a free my|screen TV.

From what I've snooped, Solid Broadband Corporation might or will launch more brands on their "my" series: my|sound and my|book. my|sound might be a line of speakers or audio system and my|book is rumored to be a line of cheap and portable laptops. Exciting isn't it?

Hey Destiny, how about getting those Star Channels back on CATV and fixing our mydestiny cable internet speed problems first? I've been experiencing very slow browsing and download speeds every afternoon and evening for the past 3 weeks already.
