Need A Reason To Ditch Your Sun Cellular?
Thursday, November 27, 2008

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -315906.4

Well, here's one. Lalaine's 300+ minutes worth of Sun-to-Sun calls have been eaten by a troll that resides within Sun Cellular's computer systems. Lalaine and I reload our Sun Cellular accounts with the P150 Text Unlimited card. It has 30 days of unlimited Sun-to-Sun SMS and 4 hours Sun-to-Sun voice calls. Since we also have a PLDT Landline Plus line, her call credits are barely used.

This morning, she decided to check her remaining call credits since and low and behold. The supposedly 300+ minutes remaining are gone.

Calls to their hotline are rather useless since you won't get definite answers. I had my share of unfortunate calls with them. Yes, they are of the same quality as PLDT CSRs.

The person Lalaine talked to earlier said that they'll "investigate" what happened and expect a resolution within 3 working days. Yeah right. I know that Sun is the main reason why unlimited texting from Globe and Smart exists and I thank them for that. But if you're not getting what you've paid for, then that's another story.

Times like this, Php150 IS Php150. For some people, it could mean a meal for an entire day.

Should we switch our backup mobile phones from Sun Cellular to Red Mobile? From Rocky's word, "Makes you think hey?"

ümobile is Dead while Red Mobile is Sick and Needs a CURE

Captain's Log Stardate -315904.59

ümobile's branding and concept was cool. Ad supported network, free credits, cheap GPRS/3G per minute rates, and the ability to change your number on the fly. Now after almost 6 months of beta testing ümobile, the head honchos of CURE decided to scrap everything they marketed 5-6 months ago and go full blast with a generic looking Red Mobile brand logo.

Yes, the weird TV commercials you're seeing about some new mobile company is the new ümobile. ümobile is now called Red Mobile minus the cool ad supported/free credits concept, non-2G support, number customization, and cheap 3G/GPRS browsing rates. No more invite codes. No more exclusivity to 16-35yr olds. No more free credits!

Instead of relying on invite codes, anyone now can buy their own Red Mobile SIM for just Php39 per piece. Ironically, the Red Mobile SIM card is cheap but the 3G phones are not.

Red Mobile is obviously targeting Sun Cellular with their TV Ad Campaigns. From the "sorry all lines are busy now", to the choppy signal, and to the funny "tone" sound. I've been a subscriber of Sun Cellular since March 2003 and believe me, these 3 commercials are aimed at SUN.

The commercials are quite good, unfortunately, the new "re-branding" isn't. The old ümobile logo was cool while the new Red Mobile logo looks like it was made by a grade schooler. That guy must be very rich by now. :P

Seriously, what was CURE thinking? umobile's branding IS cool. Why change it? Here's some rundown on what have changed:
  • From the original P0.15 ümobile to ümobile SMS, it's now at P0.50 red mobile to red mobile.
  • From P0.75 ümobile to other networks, it's now P1.00 red mobile to other networks SMS.
  • From P5.00 ümobile to ümobile voice calls, it's now down to P0.50 red mobile to red mobile.
  • From P7.00 ümobile to other network voice calls, it's now down to P6.50
  • From P6.50 ümobile to ümobile video calls, it's now down to P0.50 red mobile to red mobile.
  • The original ümobile browsing rate of P0.33 per minute is gone. From the current rate of P7.50 per 15 minutes, Red Mobile provides the most expensive 3G rate in the country.
  • No more invite codes. Anyone can buy the SIM for Php39 each.

So, will I ditch my Sun Cellular prepaid in favor of Red Mobile? Probably not. Not yet. I'm currently contented with Sun Cellular even with their "Sorry all lines are busy now..." and choppy calls. It's still tolerable :P

Sun Cellular's P150 Text Unlimited is STILL cheaper than loading the P300 credits of Red Mobile. P150 Text Unlimited translates to unlimited Sun-to-Sun SMS for 30 days plus 4 hours Sun-to-Sun voice calls. While Red Mobile's P300 can mean 600 RM-to-RM SMS or 600 minutes of Rm-o-RM voice calls. Sun is still cheaper. Besides, I still have my 10 year old Globe Handyphone as my main line and I also happen to have a PLDT Landline Plus.

Who knows, I might ditch my Sun Cellular SIM if Red Mobile even lowers their rates to P0.15. *wishful thinking*

Talk about cheezy commercials. Makes you wonder, Smart is very rich just to scrap a brand that they marketed with hundreds of free 3G phones, parties, etc.

My Name is James Tiberius Kirk
Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315882.9

The official trailer of the latest Star Trek movie is finally out. I have to admit that JJ Abrams atleast gave "life" to Star Trek with all those action shots but let's face it. William Shatner is James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy is Spock. No other actors can ever replace them, not even an anti-superhero who plays the young Spock.

As I've said before, JJ Abrams is a jerk for ignoring William Shatner. He continues this jerkiness by changing one of the most recognizable visual effects on the screen, the transporter beam animation.

From the classic speckling effect to swirling lights... this isn't right. That's not Star Trek. What was he thinking?! This isn't Stargate assw!pe!

Let's put it this way, JJ Abrams is creating an action movie using the Star Trek characters just like what Michael Bay did with Transformers. Michael Bay used big alien robots in an action movie and called it Transformers without even a slightest relation to the real Transformers.

Now imagine having an alien movie with spaceships and naming the lead casts as Kirk and Spock... Presto! You have a new action movie bearing the name Star Trek.

New phasers, new Enterprise bridge that looks like an Apple Store, new Enterprise design, Chekov with Sulu at the helm, new Transporter beam animation... THIS ISN'T STAR TREK DAMMIT!

It might have been cool if the movie's setting is set after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis. Having Kirk, Picard and Janeway would have been awesome if partnered with JJ Abrams' action scenes.

ABS-CBN Acquires Multiply Shares
Monday, November 17, 2008

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -315878.98

Philippine media giant, ABS-CBN, has acquired a five percent stake of social networking site Multiply for about US$5 million.

ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, through its subsidiary ABS-CBN Global Ltd., has bought a five percent stake in social networking site Multiply.

In a statement, ABS-CBN said it purchased 2,524,488 shares of Series P Common Stock in Multiply, Inc. at a purchase price of $1.9806 per share, or a total purchase price of $5,000,000.93 last November 13.

Under the stock purchase agreement between ABS-CBN Global and Multiply, ABS-CBN Global may, during the two-year period following the initial purchase of shares, acquire additional shares in Multiply to bring its ownership to as much as 10 percent of the total authorized stock of Multiply.
"ABS-CBN Global is confident that, despite a challenging economic environment, its investment in Multiply will complement, enhance and upgrade ABS-CBN’s and its subsidiaries’ television and radio broadcasting, content production and distribution, and internet and online businesses through organic and unbiased marketing and promotion of its programs, products and services generated by and through the Multiply website," it said in a statement.

Multiply, on the other hand, trusts that ABS-CBN Global’s strength in marketing, advertising and content, will bring in additional new users of the website and revenues for the social networking giant.

This deal is still clueless.

The Generics Pharmacy
Thursday, November 13, 2008

Captain's Log Stardate -315866.13

I bought some medicines for our medicine cabinet last week. Paracetamols, Carbocisteine (Solmux), antacids, Mefenamic Acid, and sore throat lozenges. Guess how much I spent on all these meds? P300? Nope, I bought all of them for just under P100.

That's the magic of generic medicines. For all these years, we've been spending a lot on medicines. Imagine, A 500mg Paracetamol (Biogesic) from Mercury Drug Store costs about P2.75 while a generic brand from The Generics Pharmacy costs only P0.50. That's more than 80% in savings!

The medicines sold at The Generics Pharmacy are of course generic medicines. These are products that have the same active ingredients, same dosage and strength as the branded and expensive medicines on bigger drugstores. They are also safe as the pharmacy is recognized by the Department of Health (DOH) and the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD).

Let's go generic!
