You Guys Helped 150 Families!
Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Captain's Log Supplemental Stardate -314801.93

The total monetary donation we got from our GameOPS Typhoon Ondoy Donation Drive was PHP10,500.

We used the money we've collected to buy food and medicines for the families living at Barangay Sta. Lucia - Novaliches, Quezon City. We wanted to help everyone but due to our limited resources, we asked the help of their Barangay Captain so we can give the relief goods to the families who need help the most.

All in all, we were able to pack for 150 families (pictures here) and distributed it last October 14, 2009 with Lalaine and Glen. We may not have given these people their homes back, but let's all just think that for at least one day, we've helped 150 families.

You can still donate directly to the Philippine National Red Cross via PayPal using the widget below. Supplies are already running low and there are still a lot of people who need help, especially those living in Northern Luzon, Philippines.

We won't take credit for this simple relief mission, because this will not be possible if weren't for you guys. Thank you to those who sent donations through PayPal, LBC and Globe G-Cash. Thank you to those who sent hundreds of used clothes. Thank you to those who donated canned goods and sacks of rice. You guys know who you are.

Keep helping and let's all keep the Bayanihan Spirit alive! And always remember,

"Where I'm from, Everyone's a Hero"

Thank you and you guys rock!

Bangon Pinoy!

Captain's Log Stardate -314801.87

Globe formally launched Bangon Pinoy, NO NOT THAT BRO. EDDIE GROUP, today at EDSA Shangri-La. I was not able to attend the press launch this morning so I will leech the info from Noelle's post,

Globe pegs their affected cellular subscribers at 1.6 million total (prepaid and postpaid), and broadband subscribers at 14,000. That's a lot of people, and Globe is about to spend approximately 150 million pesos on consumer offers for them. Broadband subscribers are set to get rebates on their service from September 26 until the date service is restored, or they can be migrated to Globe's WiMax service (wireless broadband) with a 50% discount on their first month. Globe also offers free replacement for damaged modems.

While postpaid cell subscribers get one month free, prepaid cell subscribers will automatically receive one week's worth of load (amount dependent on how much they usually purchase in a week).

Aside from giving rebates to affected subscribers, Globe and the Philippine Blog Awards will also be raising funds on Twitter,
Use the #BangonPinoy hashtag, Globe and PBA will guarantee P1.00 to be spent for Ondoy and Pepeng victims. After the hashtag, post pictures, videos, quotes and even links to blog posts that will inspire Filipinos around the world to help as well. This happens from Oct 19 to Nov 3, prior the Nov 6 Help day.

The Bangon Pinoy Help Days are days in which Globe employees and bloggers do actual physical help (Nov6 will be tree-planting day on Region 1). Bangon Pinoy is Globe Telecom’s way of giving back. We hope to help our fellow Filipinos to get back on their feet and to move forward.

Blog Action Day - Climate Change
Thursday, October 15, 2009

Captain's Log Stardate -314788.82

So I heard that some kind of Climate Change Bill was passed or was already approved by the Philippine government because of what happened the past 3 weeks. Ondoy and Pepeng brought rains and made almost half of Luzon look like a set from the 1995 movie Waterworld.

Climate change, global warming, or whatever term you want to call it is here and we may not be able to do anything about it. Well, not really. Scientists are claiming that we're already in a point of no return. Meaning, there's really nothing we could do to stop climate change except to slow it down maybe for at least a few generations.

Well, we can start at home.

  • Change all of those lightbulbs to CFL.

  • Remember that in the early days, aircons are non-existent so use the fan!

  • Segregate your wastes and pack them properly before throwing them away.

  • Minimize the use of plastic bags, use recyclable paper bags.

  • Going to the cemetery this Nov. 1? Lit only one candle

  • Conserve gas, use public transpo or do a carpool with friends

  • Use the so-called "political will" on the men on robes (aka priests) and push the Reproductive Health Bill. We don't need another 100 million Filipinos in the next decade and we don't want our politicians to be dictated by these priests because they can control or influence flocks of voters.

  • Smoking is bad for your help, and the environment.

  • Unplug your electronics when not in used.

I know there are still countless ways we can help slow down Climate Change. And if we need to act, we need to do it now.

Do you want to live in Kevin Costner's Waterworld? I don't.
